Shield
(A tectonic term); “a large area exposed
basement rocks in a craton, commonly with a
very gently convex surface, surrounded by
sediment covered plate form”
The rocks of all shield areas are Precambrian
Syn: Continental Shield, Cratogene, Continental
Nucleus
Craton
“A part of earth crust that has attained stability,
and has been little deformed for prolong
period”
The term is strictly used for Precambrian age
Shield Rocks in Pakistan
The Indian Shield elements are exposed in
areas of Sindh and Punjab
In Sindh Plains, the basement rocks are exposed
near Nagar Parkar
Whereas the Punjab the rocks are present near
Sarghodha
The following complexes have been identified as
Indian Shield Rocks
A. Nagar Parkar Igneous Complex
B. Kirana Complex
A. Nagar Parkar Igneous Complex
Jan et al 1997, Nagar Parkar Igneous Complex
Earlier Butt et al 1994, Nagar Parkar Granitic
Lithology
Oldest rocks are metamorphosed basic igneous rocks
The acidic dykes have intruded these “metabasites”
Again all the granites and other rocks are intruded by mafic
dytes (Note: means overall three time intrustion takes place)
Age
Late Proterozoic (Precambrian)
Correlation
Continuation of the granitoid of the Indian Rajistan

B. Kirana Complex
Exposed in Panjab, covering the areas from Sargodha
to Shahkot; under the
lat. 310 34’ 30’’N-310 58’ 30’’N and
long. 720 34’ 30’’E-730 34’ 30’’E
Major exposures near the towns of Sargodha, Chiniot,
Shahkot and Sangla Hills
Composition
i. Metasedimentary Rocks
Grey slates, red and grey quartzite and
conglomerate
ii. Volcanics and Metavolcanics
No plutonic rock have been reported
In lower part of the sequence
metasedimentary rocks interlayered with
andesite, rhyolite and tuff beds and solid lava
flow at the base
