Life Processes of

Humans
Breathing
Learning Objective:

 State that human use nose, trachea and lungs to

breathe.
 Sketch the passage of air during inhalation and
exhalation.
 Describe chest movement by placing hand on
chest during inhalation and exhalation
Breathing
 Humans need to breathe to stay alive.
 Breathing organs of humans are the lungs.
 Breathingtract of humans includes the nose
(sometime mouth) and trachea.

Inhalation and Exhalation:
 Breathing involves two processes:
1. Inhaling (taking in air into the body)
2. Exhaling (giving out air from the body)

 When we breathe, we inhale and exhale air. This

causes our chest to move up and down.
Inhalation:
 Duringinhalation, air is taken in through nose, down
the trachea and into the lungs.
 The lungs will expand and the chest rises outwards.
 The air contains more oxygen.

Nose Trachea Lungs

Exhalation
 Duringexhalation, the air inside the lungs flows out of
the lungs into trachea and then out through the nose.
 The lungs contract and the chest move inwards.
 The
exhaled air that flows out of the nose contains
more carbon dioxide.

Let’s practice:
Rate of breathing
 Rate of breathing-the number of times the chest rises and
falls in one minutes.

 Depends on the types of activities carried out.

 When we are resting, our rate of breathing is lower. When

we are exercising or active, our rate of breathing is
higher.

 Different people have different rates of breathing.

Factor that affect the rate of breathing:

Types of
activities

Weather Emotion

Altitude Age
