 THE SUBMERGED FRAMO PUMPS WERE DEVELOPED BY FRANK MOHN AS IN CLOSE

COOPERATION WITH CHEMICAL TANKER OPERATORS DURING THE SIXTIES

 FRAMO CARGO PUMPS RANGE FROM 50 M3/H TO 2000 M3/H

WHAT IS FRAMO SYSTEM ?

 A CENTRALISED HYDRAULIC SYSTEM WHICH IS USED TO

OPERATED AND PROVIDE STEPLESS CONTROL TO THE VARIOUS
CARGO AND DECK MACHINERIES

 CARGO PUMPS, BALLAST PUMPS, STRIPPING PUMPS, EMERGENCY

FIRE PUMPS, HYDRAULIC DECK MACHINERIES AND BOW
THRUSRTERS ETC. ARE DRIVEN BY A HYDRAULIC MOTOR

 EACH OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED HYDRAULIC MOTOR IS DRIVEN

BY HIGH PRESSURE OIL SUPPLY FROM HIGH PRESS. HYDRAULIC
MAIN

 THE HIGH PRESSURE HYDRAULIC MAIN IS SUPPLIED BY A

CENTRALISED HYDRAULIC OIL SUPPLY UNIT ( HYDRAULIC POWER
PACK) LOCATED IN THE ENGINE ROOM
HYDRAULIC DRIVEN FRAMO MACHINERY

 ALL THE HYDRAULIC MACHINERIES ONBOARD SPECIALLY

RELATED TO CARGO AND DECK ARE DRIVEN HYDRAULICALLY

OVERVIEW OF FRAMO CARGO PUMPING SYSTEM

 PUMP ROOM TOTALLY ELIMINATED

 FRAMO PUMPS ARE OF SUBMERGED TYPE

 EACH SUBMERGED PUMP OF SPECIALISED DESIGN - FRAMO

PUMPS

 VERY COMMON FOR PRODUCT AND CHEMICAL TANKERS

 EACH TANKS HAVE THEIR DEDICATED SUBMERGED FRAMO PUMPS

 EACH FRAMO PUMP LOCATED IN A DEPRESSION OF TANK BOTTOM

(SUMP OR WELL)

 HYD. OIL SUPPLY & RETURN THROUGH ANNULAR PIPES WHICH ARE
PROTECTED BY ANOTHER ANNULAR PIPE - “COFFERDAM “

 STEPLESS CONTROL OF EACH FRAMO PUMP OVER ENTIRE

OPERATING RANGE – “SPEED TORQUE CONTROL VALVE”(STC V/V)
SAFE OPERATION
Dangerous chemicals, acids, oils or edibles must be
handled in a safe way for people and environment.
The tanker must be equipped with cargo pumps that
can efficiently empty cargo tanks and associated
cargo piping to meet the most stringent requirements
and withstand the tough impact during:
1. Hours of tank cleaning afterwards.
2. Switch between cargoes without cargo
contamination.
3. Carry anything from acids to drinking water.
Recommendations
• High melting point cargoes such as Phenol, Palm fatty
acid distillates lauric and Stearic acid has inherent
property to form lumps of cargo. It is therefore
recommended to turn the cargo pumps at regular
intervals during the voyage and prior to discharge in
order to avoid any last minute surprises. All the lines to
be then blown back to the cargo tanks.
• The danger of frozen valves, pressure/vacuum in the
tanks to be monitored during loading, voyage and
discharge. In the event if any of the pumps are found
frozen, deployment of portable pump should not be
considered without a proper risk assessment and office
permission.
Hydraulic Piping
The need for quality hydraulic installation onboard vessels
operating in severe marine environment has led to the
development and manufacturing of Framo hydraulic piping
systems. The hydraulic piping system is based on high
quality components and piping materials.

Hydraulic Drive
• A complete system designed and
manufactured by Framo. Hydraulic drive
provides the most flexible and safe power
transmission for a cargo pumping system
on tankers.

CARGO HEATING

Framo deck mounted cargo heaters eliminate the

need for in-tank heating coils. The cargo tank
interior can be made with flush tank top free from
coils, brackets and clamps. A flush tank top
facilitates quicker stripping with less cargo
remaining in the tank. The cargo tank washing can
be performed quicker, with less consumption of
washing water and less slop handling.

CARGO COOLING

The Framo cargo cooling system enables chemical

carriers to also transport low-boiling-point cargoes
and semi-gases. Cargoes such as Propylene
Oxide and Isoprene are often transported on board
chemical carriers which use our cooling system to
maintain a safe cargo temperature.

CARGO CIRCULATION
To prevent sediments settling on the tank-top
during transport and to maintain the liquid quality,
a Framo diffusor can be installed on the outlet of
the dropline. During voyage cargo is circulated
through the diffusor by running the cargo pump at
intervals.

before and after discharge operation
Stripping

When the cargo tank is empty, the

speed of the cargo pump is reduced to
perform the final stripping of tank.

Water jet educators
Use of educators
Eductors may be used for ballast stripping purposes. To strip
efficiently, an eductor used for tank cleaning operations should
have a capacity of about twice the rate of liquid being introduced
to the tanks.
• Eductors are always to be operated at or near their design driving pressure
as, in general, lower driving pressures will considerably reduce eductor
efficiency. Higher back pressures in the system than the eductor was
designed for can also reduce suction capacity.
• The eductor drive liquid must always be flowing before the suction valve is
opened to prevent back flow of the driving liquid to the tank suction.
• When shutting down an eductor the suction valve is to remain open until the
eductor is stopped to prevent the eductor drawing a vacuum on the suction
line.
• If, during use, the eductor driving pressure falls below the required operating
pressure, the eductor suction valve is to be closed to prevent backflow of the
driving liquid. The tank suction must not be used to prevent backflow as the
suction pipework is not designed for such high operating pressures.
