 HISTORY OF BABA NYONYA
Early fifteenth century, a number of early Chinese traders married local Malay women to create an ethnic
sub group of Malay Chinese. Most of the Baba Nyonya Situated around Malacca, Singapore and Penang.
Baba Nyonya intermarriage of Chinese people from china with the native people in Peninsula Malaysia.
The meaning of Baba Nyona, Baba = Male, Nyonya = Female.

It applies more to the ethnic Chinese populations of British

Straits Settlements of Malaya Dutch controlled island of Java
and other locations , who have adopted partially to be somewhat
assimilated into the local communities .
 LANGUAGE OF BABA NYONYA
•This is a dying language whose contemporary use is mainly
limited to older generation members.
• Now English has replaces the major language used by this
younger generation..
•Baba-Nyonya language is Baba Malay, which kind of similar
to Malay language (Bahasa Malay) but mix with some
Chinese Language due to the combine of two different culture
language.
•Baba Malay usually only happens in speaking, they normally
will read/write in Chinese, Malay or English.

WHAT KIND OF TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL & CELEBRATION DOES BABA NYONYA HAVE….
 BABA NYONYA MARRIAGE
There are only three important days which is First, Third and Twelfth Day.

• First Day: Escorting

• Both husband and wife have to dress traditional attire and set up
nicely.

• Third Day: Offer Tea

Both husband and wife have to give tea to their parents.

• Twelfth Day: Wedding Day

Wedding party it is similar as culture. There are singing and dancing
session on the wedding party.

- Nyonya kebaya is a unique traditional ethnic clothing worn by the straits

settlement chinese ladies who are known as nyonya’s.

- Nyonya kebaya is different from the other kebayas as the material used for the
top is sheer. Gauze cotton,voile or georgette

- Beaded slippers called kasot manek were handmade with much skill as well as
patience
- The nyonya’s clothing, baju panjang was adapted from the native malay’s baju
kurung.

- The kebaya encim was commonly worn by chinese ladies in javan coastal
cities with significant chinese settlements.
 WHAT KIND OF TASTY FOOD DOES BABA
NYONYA HAD?
• The mixture of baba nyonya is from the culture of Chinese and Malay.
• Their food is using Chinese wok cooking styles with Malay ingredients and
condiments, such as candlenut, Vietnamese coriander and fermented shrimp
paste, relying on sour sauces and coconut milk.
