FETOMATERNAL BLOOD

CIRCULATION
Eggy Raynaldi Rachman Nurhadi
Fetomaternal Blood Circulation Theory
• 1st Theory
• In the first trimester, endovascular trophoblast migrate along the decidual
spiral arteries, invade the vessel walls, and create a path for maternal blood
to perfuse the placenta intervillous space
• Supported by the presence of endovascular trophoblast in the decidual spiral
arteries
• 2nd Theory
• Thropoblast invade decidual spiral arteries and form trophoblast plugs. It
obstruct maternal blood flow during 1st trimester and the plug loosen and let
the blood flow
• Observation of ex vivo histologic analysis of hysterectomy specimen of 1st
trimester placenta
Maternal-Placental Circulation
• Uterine artery
• Spiral artery
• Basal plate
• Chorionic plate
• External microvillous surface of chorionic villi
• Blood exchange
• Venous orifices in the basal plate
• Uterine vein
Placental-Fetal Circulation
• Umbilical arteries
• Branching beneath the amnion and chorion
• Chorionic vessels
• Truncal Vessels
• Branching within the vessel
• Capillary Network in the terminal villous branches
• Blood exchange
• Umbilical vein
