Just in Time
• Just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing, also known
as just-in-time production or the Toyota
Production System (TPS), is a methodology aimed
primarily at reducing times within production
system as well as response times from suppliers
and to customers.
• Just in time (JIT) is an inventory
management method whereby materials, goods,
and labor are scheduled to arrive or be
replenished exactly when needed in the
production process.
Characteristics of JIT
• Inventory Reduction as a Tool for
Improvement.
• Waste Reduction
• Supplier Relationships
• Small lot size
• Minimum movements
• Total Quality Assurance
• Preventive Maintenance
Lot Size
• Lot size refers to the quantity of an item
ordered for delivery on a specific date or
manufactured in a single production run.
• In other words, lot size basically refers to the
total quantity of a product ordered for
manufacturing.
• A simple example of lot size is: when we buy a
pack of six chocolates, it refers to buying a
single lot of chocolate.
Advantages of Small lot size
• Lean system uses lots size as small as
possible.
• Small lots reduce average level of inventory
than having larger lots.
• Smaller lots pass through faster since no
materials are kept waiting.
• If items are defective , larger item cause
delays due to finding the items in larger
group.
• Small lot helps achieve uniform workload on
system and prevent over production.
