Photoconductivity
Photoconductivity is
a phenomenon in
which a material
becomes more
electrically
conductive due to
the absorption of
photoconductive
light. materials only conducts
electricity when light is
shone on them
Vocabulary

1. Solenium – photocunductive material

2. Drum – inside the photocopier, there is a metal drum

3. Toner cartridge- contains toner powder

4. Photoconductivity – you already discussed.

The drum, or belt, is made out
of photoconductive material called
selenium.
Here are the actual steps involved in
making a photocopy:

1. The surface of the drum is charged.

2. The image to be photocopied is

placed on a sheet of clear glass above
the drum.

3. An intense beam of light is shone

on the image.
What happens
next? The darkers areas of the image reflects less light.
The corrosponding regions on the drum remains
insulating , and the positive charges remain on the
surface of the drum

The lighter areas of image reflect more light on to the

drum below. These areas of the drum become
conducting and are discharged. (as drum is connected
to earth
4. As the drum rolls, Negatively charged, dry,
Next
black pigment called toner is then spread over
the surface of the drum, and the pigment
particles adhere to the positive charges that
remain.

Toner cartridge with negatively

charged toner powder
5. A positively charged
sheet of paper then passes
over the surface of the
drum, attracting the beads
of toner away from it.

6. The paper is
then heated and
pressed to fuse
the image formed
by the toner to the
paper's surface
permanently.
1. A positively charged drum coated with
selenium.
2. Image placed over glass sheet, light is shone
over it.
3. Light areas reflect more light, becomes
conductive and discharged as it is given an
earthing connection.
4. Dark text reflects less light thus over there
drum remains insulating and positive charge
remains there. Which serves as a template.
5. This positively charged image attracts
negatively charged toner which is then shifted
to positively charged paper.
6. The sheet of paper is then heated which fuses
toner permanently on paper.

Summary of points
Spray painting
The spray gun is charged
positively, which causes
every paint particle to
become positively charged.
Like charges repel and the
paint particles spread out.

The charged paint particles

are connected to metallic car
body which is earthed.

In this way a uniform coat of

paint is produced on the
vehicles.
Other uses are electrostatic
generators, electrostatic
precipitators and crop
sprayer
