desire to harness the forces of Nature to the
service of mankind”

4 INTRODUCTION
 Nicolas Tesla invented tesla turbine in 1913
 Tesla turbine is bladeless turbine.
 It is a radial type turbine.
 The tesla turbine is also known as boundary layer
turbine, cohesion-type turbine and prandtl layer
turbine in general nomenclature.

6 Efficiency comparison with other turbines
 Tesla was able to demonstrate a
fuel efficiency of 60% with his
bladeless turbine design. Most of
engines today do not get above
27-28% energy efficiency in their
conversion of fuel to work.
 The only viable technology
capable of delivering the elusive
sustainable growth formula more
power , pollution free ,less cost is
the Tesla or boundary layer turbine.

8 WORKING PRINCIPLE

 Adhesion and viscosity are the two properties of any fluid, these two
properties work together in the tesla turbine to transfer energy from
the fluid to the rotor or vice versa.
1. As the fluid moves past each disk, adhesive forces cause the fluid
Molecules just above the metal surface to slow down and stick
2. The molecules just above those at the surface slow down when they
collide with molecule's sticking to the surface
3. These molecules in turn slow down the flow just above them.
4. The farther one moves away from the surface the fewer the collision
affected by the objects surface .
5. At the same time ,viscous forces cause the molecules of the fluid to
resist the separation.
9
6.This generates a pulling force that is transmitted to the disc , causing the disc
to move in the direction of the fluid.
 The thin layer of fluid that interacts with the disc surface in this way is called
the boundary layer , and the interaction of fluid with the solid surface is
called boundary layer effect. As a result of this effect, the propelling fluid
follows a rapidly accelerated spiral path allowing the disc faces until it
reaches a suitable exit.
 With proper use of analytical results, the rotor efficiency using laminar flow
can be very high ,even above 95% .
10 OBJECTIVES
 To prove and find the efficiency of Tesla Turbine.
 There is an optimum speed for tesla turbine which depends on the
diameter of the discs.
 If this speed is exceeded it will cause the discs to be distorted.
 A self adjusting nozzle is introduced which controls the flow of fluid
according to amount of water in the reservoir ,the fluid pressure and the
speed of the turbine. This can be implemented to any turbomachinery.
 This can increase efficiency as well as decrease wear and tear of rotor
discs.
 Tesla turbine can be used as a steam or mixed fluid turbine.
 And it is small and very easy to manufacture
11 Methodology
 The tesla turbine is simulated using ansys fluent and ansys CFX.
 The necessary findings are taken from it.
 Then a test rig is constructed and actual findings are found out.
 Both values are compared.
12 CONCLUSION
Tesla turbine have a high efficiency compared to other conventional
turbines, harnessing this property we could find a more efficient energy
alternative in a cost effective way. The modifications that we are
planning to make may help in increase the efficiency even further and
the system we are suggesting can be applied to any of the
turbomachinery.
