Given task to design an Environment

Awareness & Research center, Rajagiriya

TO MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS
AND RESEARCH CENTER CATER TO THE
NEEDS OF RESEARCHES WORKING ON
WETLANDS BY PROVIDING
LABORATORIES, WORK SPACES AND
RESOURCES TO PROVIDE INTERACTIONS
BETWEEN RESEARCHER AND SCHOLAR
WHILE PROVIDING MEANS TO CREATE
AWARENESS WITHIN THE PUBLIC
THROUGH AN ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY
MANNER SUITING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF
PEOPLE ALSO EMPHASIZING THE HIGH
BIODIVERSITY ALREADY EXISTING IN
KOTTE.
Site is located in south western part of the
country, about 5 miles (8km) south east of the
commercial capital of Colombo, Rajagiriya is
immediate town along main drive way before you
approach Sri Jayawardanapura, Kotte. Main Access
to to site can get from the Royal Gardens Rd.
The proposed project site is identified as
Approx. 1.5 Acre property which is half of the
complete area of land along the main access way
Colombo to Sri Jayawardanapura in Rajagiriya,
boarding the canal. The land belongs to the UDA
and is available for suitable development.
This project contains two parts functioning
together in the same building structure. One is
Research and the other is Awareness

As a normative Support/Structure supports

the Plants to grow in the urban context,
this building Structure will support the
Research by,
Letting the Research Grow
throughout the Structure.

Earth Colours- to merge with the
pallet- environment. I didn’t want to emphasize the
Walls/ Separations building. I wanted to camouflage it in the
existing vegetation which was quiet rare to
Nippon Paints see in an urban context.

• Natural light and ventilation

The building is designed to get maximum daylight and to facilitate cross ventilation.
Voids Double heights allow air to circulate.

• Rainwater harvesting

Roof storm water will be collected in a separate sump and will be used for toilet
flushing, landscaping and firefighting.
