SEED PLANT
 Scientificname: Cuminum cyminum
 Family: Umbelliferae
 cumin is an important species crop. It is also
known as Jeera.
 Cumin seed is basically native to the Egypt
and it now grows in countries like India,
north Africa, China.
 In India mainly grown in Gujarat, Rajasthan,
Uttar Pradesh and about 70% of world
production of cumin is produced in India.
 Itis an important spice mainly used in Nepali
and Indian kitchens regularly for flavoring
various food preparations.

 Cumin seed are the used in various Ayurvedic

herbal medicine and also especially for
stomach pain and digestion.
 Habitat terrestrial
 The height of cumin plant is 20-30cm
 Root: cumin plant is tap root system but
weak root system which is mostly confined to
10-20cm depth of the soil.
 Flower color: mostly pink, sometimes white
also
 Leaf type: the leaves are compound
 The leaves are simple(long ; divided and
deep green color)
 Fruit type: (general) the fruit is dry but does
not split open when ripe.
 Fruit length: at least 4mm
 The crop is diploid and 2n=14
 RSK-1 (grown in north India)
 TOPLKA (high yielding variety)
 NO-1
 GC-1 (released by species research station GAU
Jagudan)
 MC-43 (tolerant to wilt and blight , good yield)
 VIJAPUR-5 (bold seed and process good yield
potential, yield 580kg/ha, contain 3% oil,
mature in 115 days)
 Rajasthan zeera-19 (High yielding variety,
tolerant to wilt and blight)
 RZ-209 (resistance to wilt and blight)
 Sowing
Ideal time is nov-dec.
Seed rate: 12-15kg/ha
Sown by broadcasting and line sowing.
 Fertilizer schedule:
10-15 tones FYM/ha at the time of land
preparation.
NPK : 30:15:00
 Propagation: seed
 Application and Amplification of General
seed certification standards
 The General Seed Certification Standards
are basic and, together with the following
specific standards constitute the standards
for certification of the seed of cumin open-
pollinated varieties/composites.
Land to be used for seed production of
cumin should be free from volunteer plants
and where cumin crop has not been taken
over preceding two years.
 The first inspection shall be made before
flowering preferably within 45 days of
planting to determine isolation, volunteer
plants off types and other relevant factors.
 The second inspections shall be made during
50% flowering to check isolation, off types
and other relevant factors.
 The third inspection shall be made at
maturity and prior to harvesting to verify the
true nature of plant and other relevant
factors.
 Weed is a severe problem in cumin
cultivation. weeding at 30 and 60 days after
sowing is necessary. Thinning should also be
done during first hoeing and weeding to
remove the excess plants. Chemical weed
control through application of pre emergent
Oxcadiazone @0.5-1.0kg/ha or pre emergent
penimethalin @1.0 kg/ha is very effective.
 Powdery mildew, Alternaria blight and wilt is
main disease.
 For the control of P.M apply Sulphur or
Copper based fungicides.
 For the control of blight and wilt grow
resistant variety and apply seed treatment.
 Aphid , Thrips and Cutworm is a major pest
which is controlled by spraying.
A light irrigation is done soon after sowing.
 2nd irrigation:8-10 day after first irrigation
 Subsequent irrigation may be 15-25 intervals.
 Last heavy irrigation at the time of seed
formation.
 Field is cleaned and wilt affected plants are
uprooted before harvesting. Harvesting is
done with by cutting the plants with sickle.
 The plants are stacked on clean threshing
floor for sun drying.
 After drying seeds are separated by light
beating with sticks by winnowing.

Yield: 800kg/ha
 Fresh seeds are sun dried and then cleaned
using gravity separators. Clean seeds are
sorted and graded and then filled in
sterilized gunny bags and stored in damp-
free aerated stores.
 The harvested stock of cumin can also be
dried at 60’c. mechanical drying is quick and
prevent the losses of seed.
A) General requirements
1. Isolation
seed fields shall be isolated from the
contaminants shown in the column 1 of the
