The Atlantic Ocean
■ The ocean’s name, derived from Greek mythology, means
the “Sea of Atlas.”
■ It is second in size only to the Pacific Ocean.
■ As the second largest ocean basin, the Atlantic Ocean
borders the east coast of the U.S., while the Pacific, Earth's
largest ocean basin, borders the U.S. West Coast.
The Pacific Ocean
■ The Pacific Ocean is by far the largest of the world's ocean
basins, covering approximately 59 million square miles and
containing more than half of the free water on Earth.
■ The Pacific Ocean Is Actually Shrinking in Size by an Inch a
Year
■ 60% of the World’s Fish Comes from The Pacific Ocean
The Arctic Ocean
• The Arctic Ocean is the smallest of the world's five
ocean basins.
• The Arctic Ocean is full of life and has a fragile
ecosystem. Marine life includes walruses, whales and
jellyfish.
• The Arctic Ocean is almost completely covered with ice
for the majority of the year and its average
temperature seldom rises above freezing.
A warming climate can cause seawater to expand and ice over land to
melt, both of which can cause a rise in sea level.
The Indian Ocean
■ The Indian ocean, body of salt water covering approximately
one-fifth of the total ocean area of the world.
■ It is the smallest, geologically youngest, and physically most
complex of the world’s three major oceans.
■ About forty percent of world’s oil supply is sourced from the
depths of the Indian Ocean.
The Southern Ocean
■ During winter half of the Southern Ocean is covered in icebergs and
ice.
■ Water cooled by cold air, outgoing radiation, and katabatic winds off of
the Antarctic continent sinks and flows northward along the ocean
bottom and is replaced at the surface by an equal volume of warmer
water flowing south from the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans.
■ Many species of deep sea fish are known south of the Antarctic
Convergence, but only three, a barracuda and two lantern fishes,
seem to be confined to this zone.
Most Ocean Pollution Begins on Land
■ Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from the
land.
■ Millions of motor vehicle engines drop small amounts of oil each day
onto roads and parking lots. Much of this, too, makes its way to the
sea.
■ One million plastic bags are used every minute – each with an
average lifetime of only 15 minutes
■ In 1996, 3.8 billion plastic bottles of water were sold. In 2014, it was
57.3 billion
■ More than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every
year
