which it involves responding to the text, rather than

producing it.

reading texts in one hour. You have about 20 minutes
for each text. Your reading technique is really
important.

SUMMARY
There are 3 Sections:
The total length of text is 2,150 – 2, 750 words
ACADEMIC READING:
 Eachsection contains one long text. Texts are authentic
and are taken from books, journals, magazines and
newspaper.
 They have been written for a non-specialist audience
and are on academic topics of interest.
 Texts may contain non-verbal materials such as
diagrams, graphs or illustrations.
SKIMMING (reading for gist) is reading
quickly through a text to get a general idea
of what it is about. When you are skimming
a passage for a general understanding,
don’t try to understand every word. Jump
from paragraph to paragraph, finding the
main point in each paragraph before
moving on to the next.
SCANNING (reading for specific information) is
reading the passage to locate a piece or pieces
of information you need. When you are
scanning to locate some specific information, it
is not necessary to read and understand every
word in the passage.
Scanning is also the quickest way to locate the
part of the text where an answer to a question
is likely to be.
1. Highlight the KEY words in the question
(e.g. underlined or in italics).
2. Scan the text for the location of the key
word and highlight the sentence.
3. The answer to the question is probably
in that sentence or the one before or after it.
 Familiarize with the test structure. Make sure
to check if the questionnaires have three (3)
reading passages.
 Reading passages start with the easiest to the
most difficult.
 Follow the 15-20-25
 A lot an extra of 2 minutes to transfer your
answer for each pasage.
 You are not supposed to be reading each
word of the passage.

 You only have to read a few sentences in the

beginning to get the main idea of the
passage.
 You have to create a map to finish fast.
 Creating a map would mean underlining
some important keywords that make you
understand the main idea of the paragraph
 Summarize what you have understood.
 Write some notes on the sides of the margin.
 You’ll get back through after you have
underlined keywords in the questions too.
Reading Strategies:
•Predicting what the article may be about.
Use the titles and headings to try to predict the
article’s general content. Even if your prediction is
incorrect, this will help you to focus on the exercise
and calm your nerves so you can think clearly.
•Skimming for global information.
Skim the passage to have a general idea of what
it is all about.
•Scanning for specific information.
Scan the paragraphs to locate specific
information that may be the answer to a question.
Guessing the meaning of words from the context.
You may come across words which you do not
know the meaning. Guess the meaning of the word
from the context in which it is used.

 Be cautious on the number of words required as

answers
 Identify main and supporting ideas
 Select the Heading that covers the main topic or
theme
WHAT TO DO IN 20 MINUTES!!!

Quickly look through the questionnaire to see how many
questions/ sections are there. Read the questions before the
text (s). SKIM the titles.
 All answers are in the reading passage
 Transfer accurately onto your answer sheet. Spelling and
grammar must be correct.
 Answers to Labeling a diagram may be found in the
passages exactly as they are written. Check the spelling.
 If some items are difficult and you have to guess, do so. But
avoid leaving a number blank.
 There is NO TRANSFER TIME! Transfer within the 60
minutes allotted time for the reading test.
