Methods of

Planting
HORTICULTURE
Direct Planting
 Seeds are planted directly in the field
where they will grow up permanently
up to harvesting.
 Done to plants with big seeds such as
beans, corn, peanuts, okra, patola,
upo and ampalaya.
THINNING – this is done when direct planting
exceeds the normal number of plants per hill.
- it is the removal of excess seedlings germinated
to provide space for better growth.

PRICKING-OFF – Planting apart to give the

seedlings greater space in which to grow prior to
transplanting in the field especially if they sprout to
close to each other.
Indirect Seeding
This
is practical among plants with
small seeds such as cabbage,
pechay, mustard, tomatoes,
eggplants and spinach.
They are sown in seed boxes or
seedbeds in rows.
Transplanting
Seedlings have attained 12-15cm
in height and 3-4 leaves
developed.
Steps to follow in transplanting:
 Water the seedlings before pulling.
 Pull the seedlings carefully without shaking
off the media from the roots.
 Plant the seedlings immediately to prevent
the roots from drying out.
 Gently press the soil around the roots.
 Water the seedlings at the soil surface with a
gentle stream of water to settle the soil
around the roots.
