RELATIONS: BREAKING OUT OF
THE RUSSIAN ORBIT?
Introduction
 Written by Niklas Swanstrom (who is the director of institute for security and
development policy) in winter 2012 .
 Published by Brown journal of World Affairs, volume 19,No.1 with pages
range of 101-113.

Theme
Central Asian States became less independent and were oriented towards
formulating strategies on their own in case of military, political and economic
aspects .These were the factors for which these countries were early
dependent on Russia. Russian interest in Central Asian Countries was also
decreased .Which effected these countries but they did not suffered and
came up with more modified and improved infrastructure.
Summary
 Central Asian states were greatly dependent on Russia until 1991.
 After disintegration of Soviet Union, Russian started ignoring these states
and central Asian states also decreased their dependency.
 Central Asian States started getting closer to China.
 Russia aimed to prevent their relation and again strived to develop multi-
lateral treaties with Central Asian States.
 But, Russia was in adverse condition because of decrease rate of trade
between Russia and Central Asia.
 The decrease dependence of Central Asian States on Russia and China
would help it to increase intra-regional trade and improved its
infrastructure.
 Central Asia as a regional concept is extremely problematic.
Critical Analysis
 After disintegration of Soviet Union in 1991, interest of Russia in central
Asian states was decreased.
 Dependency of Central Asian states over Russia was reduced.
 Central Asian states were now independent and wanted to increase
their level of dominance but faced many difficulties.
 Although Central Asian States have geographic importance and are
rich in oil and gas resources but these states are less important for other
countries.
 They do not need and other country for their survival and if they
continue to progress like this they would become most prominent
among all.
