WHAT IS IT?
• Vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of
meat (red meat, poultry, seafood, and the flesh of any other animal),
and may also include abstention from animal products.
WHY PEOPLE BECOME VEGETARIAN?
• Many people object to eating meat out of respect for animals. Such
ethical motivations have been codified under religious beliefs, as
well as animal rights advocacy.
• Other motivations for vegetarianism are health-related,
political, environmental, cultural, aesthetic, economic, or personal
preference.
TYPES OF DIET
• Ovo-lacto vegetarian: diet includes both eggs and dairy
products.
• Ovo-vegetarian: diet includes eggs but not dairy products.
• Lacto-vegetarian: diet includes dairy products but not eggs.
• Vegan: excludes all animal products, including eggs and dairy.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF
BEING VEGETARIAN?
• A vegetarian diet has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular
factors. Studies have found that people who consume more meat,
the risk to develope diabetes is higher. Vegetarian food tends to be
lower in fat, especially saturated fats, and higher in fiber.
IS IT EASY TO CHANGE YOUR EATING
HABITS?
• Yes, it is. It will probably be difficult for you to change your eating
habits, but you can make small changes every day that help improve
your health. The key is to make one change at time and make an
effort to achieve your goals to have a healthy life.
