Kinds Of Productivity

• Productivity In Shape
• Productivity In meaning
• Productivity In compounding
• Used to mean a variety of different
things, and it seemed best to avoid
term entirely until any potential
confusions could be resolved.

• Productivity is closely tied to

regularity, but regularity in shape
has to be distinguished from
regularity in meaning
Productivity in Shape

• Generality happens when attached

the adjective by suffix –ness will
change the adjective to be an
abstract noun. (common)
• Regularity is same with generality
which is process of how noun
develops by adjective. It is more
concern to a possible noun. (rarely)
Example

• Generality: Rich+ness = Richness

• Regularity: Long+ness= Longness
(not used by native) rather than
length.
Productivity in Meaning

• The process of derivational is

semantically regular that has
different meaning depend on the
suffix or prefix than can be added.
• Ex: suffix –able is formally regular
and general.
Blocking

• Semantic blocking as the

phenomenon whereby the existence
of a word with a particular
meaning.
– The illustration of operation of
semantic
– The blocking influenced in inflectional
morphology
– The process of formally regular
Productivity in compounding
• Primary and secondary compounds
are highly regular semantically.
Ex: Machine-washing
Some context be interpreted
“Washing of machine”
more often it means washing in
washing-machine
• Two nouns whatever can be
juxtaposed in English to produce a
formally acceptable root compound
Measuring productivity

• What we need is a comparison

between the actual frequency of a
process and its potential frequency,
appropriately defined.
Ex: -it is formally regular when
applied to adjectives with certain
suffixes such as –ous, -ive, -and -
able
