1. Describe where Grendel lives and the nature
of his origins.
2. What does the conflict between the Danes
and Grendel symbolize? Why is Grendel
unable to touch Hrothgar’s throne?
Literary Element: Kennings
• The author uses kennings through this poem.
A kenning is an imaginative metaphorical
phrase used in place of a simple noun.
• Not very common in Modern English, but here
are a few examples:
– “gasoline guzzler”
– “cancer stick”
– “couch potato”
– “tramp stamp”
