definition

 Ultrasound is a medical process that uses sound waves through a medical

instrument to obtain images of internal organs.
 ultrasound is a sound waves which travel at such a high frequency that they
cannot be hears by humans. Ultrasound is used in medicine to get pictures of the
inside of people’s bodies.
 ultrasound or sonography is a medical imaging technique that uses high
frequency sound waves and their echoes. The technique is similar to the
echolocation used by bats, whales and dolpins, as well as SONAR used by
submarines.
Advantages of ultrasound

 ultrasound scanning is nonivansive (no needlea or injections) and is usyally painless.

 ultrasound is widely avaible, easy-to-use and less expensive than other imaging methods.
Ultrasound imaging uses non ionizing radiaton
Ultrasound scanning gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on x-ray
images.
Ultrasound causes no health problems and may be repeated as often as is necessary if
medically indicated.
There are no hazards for the patient and operator.
Disadvantages of ultrasound

 the major disadvantage is that the resolution of images is often limited.

Still in many situations where X-rays produce a much higher resolution
Bone absorb ultrasound so that brain images are hard to get
Attenuation can reduce the resolution of the image
Sonography perfroms very poorly when there is a gas between the
transducer and the organ of interest
HOW DOES ULTRASOUND WORK?
• Ultrasounds work by bouncing sound waves off an object and
listening for the sound wave to return. Measuring these bouncing
sound waves can help create an image of what the object looks
like, as sound waves bouncing on nearby aspects of the object
return faster than do those sound waves bouncing on faraway
features of the item. Various returning sound waves can have
different pitches and directions too, depending on if the sound
wave bounced off the curve of an internal organ, the density of
fluid or thick tissue.
The function of ultrasound

• In the case of pregnancy. Ultrasound (USG) is used by obstetrician (DSOG) to

estimate the womb age and the estimated day of delivery. In the world of medicine
widely. Ultrasound devices (ultrasonography) are used as a toll to diagnose parts of
the body that are awakened from fluid.
• Medical utrasonography is used in : cardiology : see echocardiography
endocrinology , gastroenterology, gynecology: see gynecologic ultrasonography
