• Provide free web space: Each member is provided free web space to publish content.

• Ask members to build profiles: Information entered in the profiles is used to connect
friends and contacts, and build networks across the world.

• Encourage members to upload content: These sites allow members to upload text
messages, photographs, audio and video files.

• Allow members to build conversations: Members can browse content and comment
upon it.

• Allow live chats and Direct Messaging Facility : Several social media sites have chat
clients that enable members to chat. Also, direct messaging is facilitated to send private
messages.

FACEBOOK
 Facebook, Inc. is an American online social media and social
networking service company.

 It is based in Menlo Park, California.

 It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004.

 Facebook can be accessed by a large range of desktops, laptops,


tablets and smartphones over the internet and mobile
networks.

 After registering, users can create a customized profile revealing


information about themselves. Users can post text, photos and
multimedia of their own devising and share it with other users
as "friends".
FEATURES OF FACEBOOK
News feed - The web feed is the primary system through
which users are exposed to content posted on the network.
News Feed highlights information that includes profile
changes, upcoming events, and birthdays, among other
updates.

Like Button - It was first enabled on February 9, 2009. The like


button enables users to easily interact with status updates,
comments, photos and videos, links shared by friends, and
advertisements.

Instant messaging - Originally developed as Facebook Chat in


2008, the company revamped its messaging service in 2010,
and subsequently released standalone iOS and Android apps
in August 2011. The service also supports voice and video
calling.
YouTube
 YouTube is an American video-sharing
website headquartered in San Bruno,
California.

 Three former PayPal employees—Chad


Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim—
created the service in February 2005.

 Google bought the site in November


2006 for US$1.65 billion; YouTube now
operates as one of Google's
subsidiaries.
 YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites, report, comment
on videos, and subscribe to other users

 Unregistered users can only watch videos on the site, while registered users are
permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos and add comments to videos.

 YouTube earns advertising revenue from Google AdSense, a program which targets
ads according to site content and audience.

 The vast majority of its videos are free to view, but there are exceptions, including
subscription-based premium channels.

 As of August 2018, the website is ranked as the second-most popular site in the
world, according to Alexa Internet.
FEATURES OF YOUTUBE
Video technology - YouTube primarily uses the VP9 and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video
formats, and the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP protocol.

Uploading - YouTube accepts videos that are uploaded in most container formats,
including AVI, MP4, MPEG-PS, QuickTime File Format and FLV.

Quality and formats - YouTube originally offered videos at only one quality level,
320×240 pixels. In December 2008, 720p HD support was added. In November 2009,
1080p HD support was added. In July 2010, 4K format was added (4096×3072 pixels). In
June 2015, 8K resolution was added (7680×4320 pixels).

Live streaming - In May 2013, creation of live streams was opened to verified users with
at least 1,000 subscribers; and in December the limit was removed. In February 2017,
live streaming was introduced to the official YouTube mobile app.
LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a business and employment-oriented
service that operates via websites and mobile apps.
Founded on December 28, 2002, and launched on May
5, 2003
It is mainly used for professional networking, including
employers posting jobs and job seekers posting their
CVs.
 As of October 2018, LinkedIn had 590 million
registered members in 200 countries, of which more
than 250 million are active.
LinkedIn allows members (both workers and employers) to create profiles and
"connections" to each other in an online social network which may represent real-
world professional relationships.
Members can invite anyone (whether an existing member or not) to become a
connection.
The "gated-access approach" (where contact with any professional requires either
an existing relationship or an introduction through a contact of theirs) is intended to
build trust among the service's members.
Since December 2016 it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft.
The site has an Alexa Internet ranking as the 28th most popular website (December
2018).
WhatsApp
 WhatsApp Messenger is a freeware and cross-platform
messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) service owned by
Facebook. The application allows the sending of text
messages and voice calls, as well as video calls, images and
other media, documents, and user location.

 The client was created by WhatsApp Inc., based in


Mountain View, California, which was acquired by Facebook
in February 2014 for approximately US$19.3 billion.

 By February 2018, WhatsApp had a user base of over one


and a half billion, making it the most popular messaging
application at the time.
TUMBLR
 Tumblr (stylized as tumblr) is a microblogging and social
networking website founded by David Karp in 2007 and owned
by Verizon Media. Acquired by Yahoo! in May 20, 2013 for $1.1
billion.

 The service allows users to post multimedia and other content


to a short-form blog. Users can follow other users' blogs.
Bloggers can also make their blogs private. For bloggers many
of the website's features are accessed from a "dashboard"
interface.

 As of March 1, 2019, Tumblr hosts over 459 million blogs. As of


January 2016, the website had 555 million monthly visitors.
TWITTER
 Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz
Stone, and Evan Williams and launched in July of that year.

 Twitter, Inc. is based in San Francisco, California, and has more


than 25 offices around the world.

 Twitter is an American online news and social networking service


on which users post and interact with messages known as
"tweets".

 Registered users can post, like, and retweet tweets, but


unregistered users can only read them. Users access Twitter
through its website,, SMS or its mobile-device application.
Snapchat
 Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app used globally, created by
Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, former students
at Stanford University, and developed by Snap Inc. in September
2011.

 One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and


messages are usually only available for a short time before they
become inaccessible to their recipients.

 Snapchat has become notable for representing a new, mobile-


first direction for social media, and places significant emphasis on
users interacting with virtual stickers and augmented reality
objects.

 As of February 2018, Snapchat has 187 million daily active users.


INSTAGRAM
 Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social networking service owned
by Facebook, Inc.

 It was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in


October 2010 exclusively on iOS. A version for Android devices was
released a year and half later, in April 2012.

 The app allows users to upload photos and videos to the service, which
can be edited with various filters, and organized with tags and location
information.

 An account's posts can be shared publicly or with pre-approved followers.


Users can "like" photos, and follow other users to add their content to a
feed.

 The service also added messaging features, the ability to include multiple
images or videos in a single post, as well as "Stories"—similar to its main
competitor Snapchat.
