Introduction to

Health Information Management System (HIMS) deals with

keeping all sorts of medical records (Confidential Patient
data) for:

 Planning
 Management
 Decision making
 Research
 Efficient file delivery to the respected areas (Clinics,
Wards, ER)
 Using confidential patient data for personal
studies

 Releasing information to unauthorized persons

 Discussing confidential information in public

 Retrieving data out of curiosity

 Tampering with the patient’s information

“You need to get into some medical records? Sure,
 Using patient identifiers (Name, Medical no problem. We’re big on security around here, so
Record No.) without the patient’s consent we keep all of our user names and passwords on a
scrap of paper under the keyboard”
Traps leading to Litigation

 Releasing highly confidential information to

the electronic media/press.

For Example:
If someone with really high security
protocol is admitted for some illness and
the staff knows all about it. He/she gets
bribed by the media and releases some
very critical information about that person
with the reassurance that the name won’t
be disclosed. The organization somehow
gets defamed and might face a litigation
which would further tarnish the reputation.
