Articles can be either

Definite or Indefinite.
1. DEFINITE ARTICLE
 There is only one definite article in English.
 THE = “O” ; “A” ; “OS” ; “AS”

When do we use “THE”?


Before nouns, preceded or not by an adjective.
Before the names of musical intruments and family names.
Before the name of oceans, seas, islands, rivers, mountains, countries, cinemas, theaters,
hotels, trains, ships.
Before adjectives that give name to a group of people.
Before nouns when we believe the hearer/reader knows exactly what we are referring to
because there is only one.
 The bike is too big for me.
 The white dog is playing with the ball.
 I love playing the guitar.
 The Mullers are a happy family.
 The Bengala river crosses Nova friburgo.
 I have always wanted to go to the United States.
 Are you staying ate the Hilton Hotel?
 Life can be very hard for the poor.
 I think the rich should pay more taxes.
 The Pope is visiting Brazil.
 The moon is very bright tonight.
2. INDEFINITE ARTICLES
 There are three Indefinite Articles in English.
 A = “UM” ; “UMA”
 AN = “UM” ; “UMA”
 SOME = “ALGUM(A)” ; “ALGUNS(MAS)” ; “UNS(MAS)”

When do we use the indifinite articles?

A AN SOME
Before consonant Before vowel sounds. Before nouns in the
sounds. plural.
 I have a blue umbrella.
 There is a car parked outside.
 Would you like a drink?
 I’ve finally got a good job.
 Jhon is a docter.
 Do you know if there is a university on this street? (*)
 That is an ugly hat.
 I have never lived in an igloo.
 Do you have an hour to talk to me? (*)
 Marry is studing to be an engeneer.
 I don’t want an apple for lunch.
 Some hair are curly.
 Can you lend me some money?
 Can I have some candy please?
 I want to buy some flowers.
 Some elephants don’t like mice.
