Take out unnecessary words, phrases, sentences, and even paragraphs.
• Awkwardness
Are there any sentences that are clumsily written, that they do not make
sense?
• Ethical writing
Is the document treating individuals, companies, groups with fairness and
respect? Is its language biased, racist, sexist, or perpetuating stereotypes?
• Active voice
Use the active voice unless the passive voice is more appropriate.
• Word choice
Delete or replace vague words and unnecessary intensifiers such as ‘ very,’
‘quite,’ ‘somehow,’ ‘somewhat,’ ‘probably,’ etc.
• Jargon
If you have any doubt that all your readers will understand any jargon or
special terms you used, eliminate or define them.
• Clichés
Replace clichés with direct statements or fresh figures of speech. Watch out
for terms like, ‘capacitate,’ ‘buy-in,’ ‘empower,’ ‘think outside the box,’
‘leverage,’ etc.
• Grammar
Subject-verb agreement, noun-pronoun antecedent, dangling modifiers,
etc.
• Typographical errors
• Word phrases
Examples include ‘that is,’ ‘there are,’ ‘the fact that,’ ‘to be,’ and
unnecessary helping verbs such as ‘will.’
