Numbers which can be expressed in
the form of
P/Q where Q≠ 0

Positive rational numbers Negative Rational Number
• Example: 9/8, 12/7,9/5 • Example : -2/3, -5/6, -23/7
Standard form /Simplest form : Common factor is 1
• Eg: 25/30
• When we divide 25/30 by 5 we get 5/6 which is further not
divisible and we get 1
Another example 12/18 when divide by 2 we get 6/9 and again
when we divide 6/9 by 3 we get 2/3
Equivalent Rational
Number
Equivalent mean equal , when numerator and
denominator are multiplied by the same non
zero integer we can get a rational number
which is equivalent to the original number
• Eg. 2/5 when multiplied by 5 we get 10/25, If we divide 10/25 by 5 we
get 2/5
• So 2/5=10/25= 6/15 are all equivalent fraction
We can find unlimited number of rational number between any two rational number
Operation of Rational Numbers
• Addition
– With same denominator
• 3/2 + 7/2 = 10/2= 5
– With different denominator
• -3/2 and -5/3 . Take L.C.M of 2 and 3 ie 6
• Now make the fractions having same denominator
-3 x 3/ 2 x 3 = -9/6
-5 x 2 / 3 x 2= -10/6
Now add -9/6 + (-10)/6 = -9 -10/6= -19/ 6 Ans
• Subtraction of Rational Number
When we subtract two rational number , we add the additive
inverse of the rational number that is being subtracted to the other
rational number.
a-b = a+ (-b)
Example: 5/3 – 14/5 = 5/3 + (-14/5)
= take LCM of 3 and 5 to make same denominator=15
s= 25/15 + ( -42/15) = -17/15 answer
• Multiplication of Rational Number
We multiply Numerator with Numerator and Denominator by Denominator
Example : 2/3 x 6/5 = 2 x 6 / 3 x 5 = 12/15 = 4/5 Answer
•Division of a Rational Number
To divide the rational number by another we multiply the rational number by
reciprocal of another number
Example: 7/8 ÷3/2 = 7/8 x 2/3 = 14/24 = 7/12 Answer
