CE Definition
 Channel Elements is measure of board capacity resources for handling of user
dedicated data channel and dedicated signaling channel
 Normalization of 1 CE:
• Downlink (DL): One AMR 12.2 kbps with SF=128
• Uplink (UL): One AMR 12.2 kbps with SF=64
 Net CE: Dedicated Channel (DCH) resources available in the system
 Gross CE: Resources available in the system including Dedicated Channel (DCH),
Common Channel (CCH) and Softer Handover
 UL and DL are on separate boards (TX Boards for DL and RAX Board for UL)

Ericsson Confidential 4 2009-07-28

CE Ladder of RAX R2 – E-DPDCH
(10 ms TTI)

Default : ROJ 119 2187/1, /2 and /3 only support this CE Ladder for E-DPDCH.
ROJ 119 2187/1 can handle up to 40, /2 up to 20 and /3 up to 10 E-DPDCH.

Optional : Change to the optional CE Ladder for E-DCH is done with SW feature FAJ 121
1157 “Channel Element Ladder for E-DCH with RAX R2”.

Optional : Change to the improved CE Ladder for E-DCH is done with SW feature FAJ 121

HSDPA CE USAGE

 HS-DSCH does not consume channel elements

 DL A-DCH does not consume channel elements from
normal SW licensed pool
 UL A-DCH consumes channel elements from normal
SW licensed pool and has to be considered in
calculations
 HSDPA 64/HS consumes 4 CE in UL per connection
 HSDPA 384/HS consumes 16 CE in UL per connection

Ericsson Confidential 11 2009-07-28

HSUPA CE USAGE

 E-DCH connections consume CEs from SW licensed

CE pool
 Certain amount of CEs is used for several bit rates
offered by E-DCH
 The resources for E-DCH are controlled by EUL
scheduler located in the RBS (not RNC)
 When EUL connection is accepted, each E-DCH user
has a minimum CE allocated to make it possible to
send non-scheduled data (e.g signaling and rate
request)

Ericsson Confidential 12 2009-07-28

HSUPA CE USAGE

 Additional CEs re-scheduling in the RBS

Ericsson Confidential 13 2009-07-28

Notes on HSDPA/EUL CE usage

 EUL can only be used by connections that use HS-

DSCH in the DL
 Not all HSDPA terminals/UEs are EUL capable

Statistic Measurements – TrigAcc & TrigSCAN
Counters
 Calculating CE Usage
Counter Used :
pmSumDlCredits/pmSumUlCredits (MO Class : Iublink, Type: TrigAcc)
Aggregate of total consumed RBS DL/UL credit measurements (in credits).

pmSamplesDlCredits/pmSamplesUlCredits (MO Class : Iublink, Type: TrigSCAN)

Number of samples in pmSumDlCredits (that is, pmSamplesDlCredits =pmSamplesDlCredits +1,
whenever pmSumDlCredits is to be updated).
Reset at each ROP period.

Formula : CE Usage = pmSumDlCredits / pmSamplesDlCredits (DL)

CE Usage = pmSumUlCredits / pmSamplesUlCredits (UL)

 Calculating CE Utilisation
Example:
HW installed 2 ROJ 119 2187/14 ( RAX R2e type) containing 128 CE
pmSumUlCredits = 136575
pmSamplesUlCredits = 900
Uplink CE Usage = 136575/900 = 151.75
CE Utilization = 151.75 / 256 = 59,28 %
Ericsson Confidential 18 2009-07-28
Statistic Measurements – pdf Counter

 If Hardware capacity is unknown, there’s another way to calculate CE Utilisation :

using pdf counter
 Counter Used : pmUlCredits (UL) / pmDlCredits (Dl)
[MO Class :Iublink)]

pmUlCredits:
The total consumed RBS UL credits, as a percentage. Stored in percentage,
according to the intervals below:
– [0] : 0 <= x < 25
– [1] : 25 <= x < 50
– [2] : 50 <= x < 60
– [3] : 60 <= x < 70

– [7] : 85 <= x < 90

Summary

1. There are two ways to measure CE utilisation :

Using TrigAcc & TrigSCAN Counter
– Calculating CE Usage and then divide by HW capacity to
get CE Utilization
– Calculating mean value to get mean CE utilization

Using pmUlCredits/pmDlCredits pdf counter

– Calculating mean value to get mean CE utilization

2. Pdf counter can show instantaneous CE usage in ranges

which can not be observed by TrigAcc & TrigScan counters
