Cool Hair Oil
What is Oil ?
• An oil is any neutral chemical substance that is a viscous liquid at
ambient temperatures, is immiscible with water but soluble in
alcohols or ethers. Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content
and are usually flammable and nonpolar. Oils may be animal,
vegetable, or petrochemical in origin, volatile or non-volatile.

Animal Oil
1)Cod-Liver Oil - an oil obtained from the livers of cod and
similar fishes; taken orally as a source of vitamins A and D
2)Lanolin -a yellow viscous animal oil extracted from wool; a
mixture of fatty acids and esters; used in some ointments and
cosmetics
3) Tallow -obtained from suet and used in making soap,
candles and lubricants
Vegetable Oil

1) Coconut Oil -a cooking oil, with medical and industrial applications as

well. Extracted from the kernel or meat of the fruit of the coconut palm.
2) Sesame Oil - cold pressed as light cooking oil, hot pressed for a darker
and stronger flavor.
3) Ricebran Oil - appealing because of lower cost than many other
vegetable oils. Widely grown in Asia.

Volatile Oil

1) Basil Oil - is used in making perfumes, as well as in

aromatherapy
2) Bergamot Oil - used in aromatherapy and in perfumes
3) Cederwood Oil -primarily used in perfumes and fragrances
4) Cardamom Oil -used in aromatherapy and other medicinal
5) Cinnamon Oil -used for flavoring and medicinally.
Ingredients used in Cool Oil

1) Menthol & its Derivatives

2)Camphor & its Derivatives
3)Cool Herbs
Menthol
Menthol is having three asymmetric/Chiral carbon atoms in the
cyclohexane ring, leading to eight possible stereoisomers (4 pair of
enantiomers). These isomers are called menthol, isomenthol,
neomenthol, and neoisomenthol These geometrical isomers also exist in
(+) & (-) or (-d-) &(-l-) form.These (- d -) & (- l -) form are also known as
Dextrorotatory & Levorotatory. There are another 4 isomers which are
known as Racemate. These are optically inactive

•RESOURCE - Natural botanical sources of commercial menthol include several
members of the mint family Labiatae (Lamiaceae), most prominently members of
the Mentha genus such as peppermint (Mentha xpiperita), cornmint (Mentha
arvensis)AKA Japaness mint and spearmint (Mentha spicata L. or M. viridis L.),
mostly found in temperate and tropical regions. Menthe Herb Arvensis leaves
contain about 70% of Menthol.
Types of Menthol
• Natural Menthol
• Synthetic Menthol
Process of Deriving Natural Menthol
Stage 1: Farmers level
Mentha arvensis leaves are boiled and oil
is extracted by steam distillation.

Stage 2: Industry level

Mentha oil extracted in stage 1 is frozen to minus 60 degrees
Celsius. This takes about 6 to 7 days.. The output consists of
30% De‐Mentholised Oil (DMO) and 70% Flakes.

Stage 3: Industry Level

These flakes are heated at 40 degrees Celsius. menthol flakes mixed with certain
proportion of mint oil kept under certain temperature control for about 25 days. The
mother liquor (conc. Mint oil ) is a bye product and can be used again till
decolourisation of oil occurs. Total recovery of bold menthol crystals is about 50 % .

How does Menthol work as a coolant?

• Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin-8(TRPM-8) a cationic ion

channel is involved in detection of normal cooling sensation in
Mammals.
• This ion channel is relatively & non selectively permeable to cations
such as Na+,K+,Mg2+,Ca2+ & located on plasma membrane of
numarous human& animal cell type.
• When menthol binds to the TRPM8 receptor, it activates a surface
pore of cell, which causes calcium ions to flow into the cell. This
causes an electrical change in the cell, which sends a message to
the brain. And because the message is the same as when cooling
causes the pore to open, the brain registers "cool”.
Advantages & Disadvantages of Menthol
• Advantages
• menthol is an effective decongestant. Menthol helps to thin mucus
and promote its expulsion.
• When taken internally, small doses of menthol can help to ease
symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
• Menthol has a soothing, cooling effect when applied to the skin.
• menthol is valued for its pain-relieving properties.
• Disadvantages
• Volatibility
• Strong Smell.
• Bitter Taste.
• Burning sensation in higher concentrations.
• Often interferes with the composition.

Camphor
• APPEARANCE - waxy, white or transparent solid with a strong,
aromatic odour.
• MOLECULAR FORMULA – C10H16O
• MOLECULAR WEIGHT –152.23 g /mol
• MELTING POINT - 175-177 °C
• BOILING POINT - 204 °C
• SPECIFIC GRAVITY - 0.990 g/ cm3
• SYNONYMS - 2-Bornanone; Bornan-2-one; 2-Camphanone;
Formosa
• RESOURCE - wood of the camphor laurel (Cinnamomum
camphora), a large evergreen tree found in Asia. The tree must be
at least 50 years old.
• SOLUBILITY -One Gm. of Camphor dissolves in about 800 cc. of
water, in 1 cc. of alcohol, in about 0.5 cc. of chloroform, and in 1 cc.
of ether, at 25° C.
Types of Camphor
• Natural Camphor
• Synthetic Camphor
Process of Deriving Natural Camphor
• Camphor is derived from the wood of the Cinnamonum camphora
tree.
• The oil from the tree is collected and heated by steam, causing the
oil to become volatile. Then the volatile oil is cooled, and the liquid
pressed out, leaving the crude camphor behind. The crude camphor
is then purified at refineries. Purification involves mixing the
camphor with lime and sand, and then subliming it, causing it to
immediately go from solid phase into gas phase without passing
through a liquid phase. The camphor is then condensed upon a
cooled surface and gets prepared for use.
Process of Deriving Synthetic Camphor
Camphor is commonly synthesized from alpha pinene, which is the
primary component of oil of turpentine
Camphor Derivative
• 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC)-UV B Protecter.Its
tradenames include Eusolex 6300 (Merck) and Parsol 5000 (DSM).
Menthol Oil
• Mentha is an aromatic herb plant having pleasant odour leaves and
is classified as an industrial crop. Mentha cuttings are sown in the
month of December and harvested during March-April. Mentha oil is
derived by steam distallation of Mentha Arvensis leaves, the basic
raw material required for the production of Menthol
• Presently India is the largest producer of Mentha oil in world
contributing about 73% of total production, and rest is contributed by
China (18%) followed by Brazil and US.
• The large scale commercial cultivation of Mentha is done in at UP (
Bilaspur , Rampur , Chandausi, Sambhal, Barabanki , Bareilly ,
Sitapur etc.) , Punjab (Jalandhar), Haryana (Ambala) , Himachal &
Bihar (Muzuffarpur
‘Cool’ Herbs
• Henna
The herb of Henna provides a cooling and soothing effect. A paste made
by crushing a few leaves of ‘Mehndi’ can be applied to resist a burning
sensation in the body & head.
• Coconut
Coconut is sweet in taste and cold in action. According to the Ayurvedic
view, coconut aids in balancing the distortion in the body systems caused
by aggravation of the fire body humor.
• Amla
The fruit of Amla is another boon for the cool oil. As it is cold by nature
and has a sweet after taste, it is useful in decreasing the heat of the
system and heat related disorders like burning sensation in eyes and head.
• Rose
• The use of Rose is extremely beneficial in the hot climate. It is not only
cooling, but also a delicious fragrant remedy. This provides a cooling effect
to the entire system and due to its tranquilizing effect, relieves the
fatigued and exhaustive state of the body.

• Sandalwood
• Another nature’s gift in this season is the sandalwood. It is used both
externally and internally to subside the effect of aggravated heat in the
body. When you suffer from headache due to heat, a paste made out of
sandalwood can be applied on the forehead for quick relief

• Ushir
• It is a cooling herb. It removes excess heat from the body and gives a
cooling effect.
