OBJECTIVES

The objective of Automobile Engineering is to develop and

understand the principles of conversion in design, construction
and working of mechanical systems.

The scope of this program is to impart knowledge to

graduating students on the basics of automobiles.

OUT COMES
Know the main components of automobile refer to chassis,
body, and frame, power unit and auxiliary systems.

Know the main function of fuel supply system is to provide fuel

to the carburetor or to the injection system

Know the main purpose of Lubrication and Cooling in an

Automobile Engine.

Know the basic requirements for ignition system in an internal

combustion Engine
Know the mechanism, the power developed by the engine is
to be transmitted to the driving wheels.

CHASSIS

when a frame is mounted with all major components to propel the

vehicle except the body is known as chassis.

Chassis is also a term used to denote as a main structure for a

complete vehicle except body on it.

It contains all major units required to set the vehicle into motion,
destroy the motion or to stop and allow it to run smoothly over different
terrain.
Chassis can also be termed as carrying unit.

Chassis is also classified according to
number of driving wheels.
4 x 2 drive vehicle - total wheels are –4 , driving
wheels are – 2
4 x 4 drive vehicle – all four wheels are driving
wheels.
6 x 2 drive vehicle – total wheels are 6 , driving
wheels are 2
6 x 4 drive vehicle – total wheels are 6 driving
wheels are 4

Functions of the frame:

1. To carry the complete weight of the vehicle and load (may

be passengers or goods)

2. To sustain the engine, transmission, accelerating and

braking torques.

3. To withstand the bending and twisting stresses due to

the rise and fall of the axles due to uneven ground
surfaces.

4. It must bear the centrifugal force for the vehicle when

negotiating a curve.

BODY

body is the upper

structure of the
vehicle and is
directly attached
or bolted to the
chassis. Body is
an enclosure or
cover to the
chassis and can
give complete
picture of an
automobile or
vehicle.

A BODY SHOULD FULFILL THE FOLLOWING

1. It should be light in weight.

2. It should induce the fatigue of the vehicle.
3. It should be spacious for the passengers and
luggage.
4. It should have less noise during the motion of
the vehicle.
5. Body must be stream lined and should have
clear all round vision.
6. It should be cheap and attractive in shape.
