Is Tech Community
Important?

@giosakti
Case 1:
Open Source Software
How Open Source
Software is
Developed
Most successful open source software, either:

1. Some part-timer(s) finding lack of

necessary tools then decided to build it by
themselves

2. A major corporation decided to create an

open source library or framework (from
scratch, or their internal libraries are open-
sourced)
Funding?
If the open-source libraries built by part-timers become
a hit, then usually:

1. A community of contributors will be created

organically, everyone will part-time into the project
2. Sometimes legal, non-profit organization from
the community will be born. Large enterprises and
public that utilize the library will sponsor the
organization
3. Some of the core contributors can also be hired
full-time by enterprises to work exclusively on
the project
If the open-source libraries initiated by enterprises
become a hit, then usually:

1. A community of contributors will be created by

the company, everyone will part-time into the
project
2. Some of the core contributors can also be hired
full-time by said enterprise to work exclusively
on the project
Why a Company that create
said software still build an open
source community?
Building a software is hard
Maintaining a software is even
hard(er)
Cost
Reliability
Shared Knowledges
This is the age of collaboration
If you built a community around
a software, then:

1. You get free QA

2. You get free work hours
3. Increase knowledge pool,
increase innovation
4. Hire better talent
Conclusion:

Community plays a significant

role in this case
Community can supports the
open source software

here?
