Problem Statement

• Elections in India are conducted almost exclusively using

electronic voting machine.

• To simplify the voting process and do away with paper ballots,

the voting is done using EVM and it makes the electoral
process secure, fair and transparent.

• EVMs praised for their simple design, ease of use and

reliability.
Project Introduction

Here we describe the design of an electronic voting machine

based on ATmega16A microcontroller. To cast a vote, users
need to press the key against the name of the candidate of
their choice. The vote is automatically saved in the
microcontroller with the help of EEPROM and simultaneously
shown in the 16x2 Alphanumeric LCD.

Component Description
• ATmega16
We are using it to compute the votes and display the
number of votes by using a LCD.

• 16X2 Alphanumeric LCD

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is an electronic display
module and find a wide range of applications. A 16x2 LCD
display is very basic module and is very commonly used in
various devices and circuits. The reasons to use LCDs are
economical, easily programmable, have no limitation of
displaying special & even custom characters (unlike in seven
segments) animations and so on.

Merits and Demerits
• Merits
- eliminates possibility of invalid votes.
- makes counting process faster.
- reduces cost of printing.
• Demerits
- some EVMs indulges viruses and hacking.
- physical tampering
Future Scope
• A timer could be included, which could automatically
end the voting after specified duration of time.
• Biometric Verification of voters, so that automatically it
can be ensured that one person is voting only once.
• It can be made more interactive by adding Sound effect
(speech) to it.
• EEPROM can be used to store the data permanently.
• We could think of connecting them to communicate
with each other and final result can be shown on one
of the LCD.
