MARINE AND COASTAL

PROCESSES AND THEIR

AFFECTS
Coastal Erosion
• Coastal erosion
- is the wearing away of land and the removal ofbeach or dune sediments by
wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds
SEDIMENT MOVEMENT ALONG COASTS
• As wave crashes on the shore, the water pushes sediment up the beach and
then pulls it back down the beach as the water slides back down.
• The term “coastal sediment processes” refers to the forces that
erode, transport and deposit sediment along shorelines. Erosion occurs
when sediment is removed from a particular location (e.g. by wind, rain or
waves)deposition occurs where sediment is added to a location.
COASTAL DEPOSITION
• When waves lose their capacity to carry or transport sediments because of a
reduction in energy, they can and will "drop" or deposit its sediment load.
Waves that do not have the capacity to transport sediments and which
results to sediment deposition and accumulation are called constructive
waves.
• Coastal deposition is the laying down of material on the coast by the sea. It
occurs when waves lose energy or when large inputs of sediment are made
into the coastal system - perhaps due to the arrival of fluvial sediment at a
river estuary.
