OPERATIONS RESEARCH & STATISTICS MAJOR
• Operations Research is a contemporary, interdisciplinary field that uses mathematical techniques to solve large-scale
optimization problems in the real world, while statistics is concerned with decision-making in the face of uncertainty, and
lies at the heart of the type of quantitative reasoning necessary for business decision making.
• The course is designed for students who want to provide themselves with the analytical and statistical skill set necessary
for success in industry, business or in the public sector. Operations research analysts are high-level problem-solvers who
use advanced techniques, such as optimization, data mining, statistical analysis and mathematical modeling, to develop
solutions that help businesses and organizations operate more efficiently and cost-effectively.

• Learning Outcomes of the major:

• To understand the importance of collecting and visualizing data and analyzing it
• Develop an understanding of mathematically formulating the problem and finding solutions to real world situations in
addition to presenting and communicating the results.
• To be ready to be employable for either careers in or further studies in operations research and statistics.

WHERE CAN I BE PLACED AFTER STUDYING OPERATIONS RESEARCH &
STATISTICS?

• Can easily find jobs in finance engineering and manufacturing

• Operations Research Analyst: Business Operations Analyst, Operations Analyst,

Operations Business Analyst
• An operations research analyst uses data mining, optimization, modeling and statistical
analysis to help organizations run more efficiently and economically. They look for ways to
minimize waste, streamline operations processes and optimize sourcing models. A good
example is how USPS uses operations research to track packages in order to provide real-time
guidance to delivery personnel to help manage distribution.
Business Analyst
• Business analytics is a “process of transforming data into actions through analysis and insights in the context
of organizational decision making and problem solving”.
• This course will enable the students to understand the use of data, information technology, statistical
analysis, quantitative methods, and mathematical or computer-based models to gain improved insight about
business operations and aid better, fact-based business decision making
• Learning Outcomes of the major:
• Understand and critically apply the concepts and methods of business analytics
• Interpret results/solutions and identify appropriate courses of action for a given managerial situation
whether a problem or an opportunity
• Foster an ability to critically analyse, synthesise and solve complex unstructured business problems
