Reducing Burden

of Heavy Bags
2019-2020
Objective:

 To reduce the burden of heavy bags among


students.
 To find out the reasons leading to increased
weight of bags.
 To find out strategies/measures which can
reduce the burden of heavy bags.
Data Collection

 The data was collected from:


 Students (interaction with primary wing students
and questionnaire from middle wing)
 Teachers- Questionnaire
 Leaders- Questionnaire
 Curriculum developers- Questionnaire
 Parents- Questionnaire
Why is it a Problem?

 It is carried by students of age from 8-13 years who climb 2-3 floors
everyday.
 It leads to health issues like:
o Pains in different parts of body( shoulder pain, back pain, cervical,
spine related problems.
o Getting tired quickly.
o Getting frequent headaches leading to lack of concentration in
studies.
o Problem in increase of height.
What are the reasons?
The data suggested various reason as follows:

Primary
• Unawareness of schedule(books/textbooks to be brought next day;
assessments during CT)
• Uninformed swapping
• Folder for sheets
• There are registers instead of notebooks.
• Weight of Language and mathematics textbooks.
• Filled water bottles, fruit boxes and lunch boxes along with stationery
materials.
Middle wing

 A student from middle wing carries around 11 to 15 things(books


and notebooks)
 Time-Table schedule
 Children not following Time Table.
 Weight of textbooks( majorly science and maths)
 Folder for sheets
 Bringing handbooks, books and notebooks of one subject.
 IT book to be heaviest to carry in particularly class IX-X.
What can be the solution?

 Suggestions across wings:


 Mindfulness of the teacher regarding instructions for the next day.
 Deciding days for textbooks and notebooks.
 Binding of heavy/thicker books term wise.
 Availing books online.
 Use of smart board can reduce the need of bringing books
sometimes.
 Conscious efforts to reduce burden of heavy bags while creating
time table(e.g. : keeping block periods)
 Relooking at the need of folders daily.

 Suggestions across wings:


 Keeping lockers/cupboards to keep heavy books in school.
 Tracking by checking bags at regular intervals.
 Awareness drive periodically.
 Splitting of handbooks.
 Replacing registers with notebooks specifically for primary wing.
What can be done: Year ahead

 Leaders:
Creating a common policy for the department.
Making structures which can reduce the burden of the bags.
Giving a set limit for the weight of Bags.
Orienting all the stakeholders concerned.
Creating awareness regarding the issue.

 Teachers:
Giving clear instructions for the next day(through diary notes).
Keeping a check on weight of bags.
Dividing days for bringing books and notebooks.

 Parents:
Monitoring what their wards are carrying.
Binding of textbooks term wise.
 Curriculum Developers:
Designing of Handbooks keeping the its weight light.
Creating parts of hand book.
 Management:
Infrastructural needs: creating racks, lockers, drawers, racks
Increase in use of technology, dashboards.
Creating a committee for monitoring and follow up.
 Students:
Re packing bags daily.
Assessing and reviewing the things not required daily.
Following instructions given for the day.
