New York City is located on the coast of the

Northeastern United States at the mount of the
Hudson River in southeastern New York State. Its
boroughs are between borders of two geologic
provinces of North America. The city’s land has been
altered considerably by human intervention, with
substantial land reclamation along the waterfronts.

It is situated across a region of contrast—from the

Atlantic shores of Long Island and the skyscrapers of
Manhattan through the rivers, mountains, and lakes of
upstate New York to the plains of the Great Lakes region.
With canals, railroads, and highways, New York is a
principal gateway to the west from the Middle Atlantic and
New England states and a hub for travel to and from much
of the country. The cities of the state and their suburbs are
home to more than four-fifths of all New Yorkers.

CHALLENGES

1. Population growth. By 2030 more than 8.5 billion people

are expected to be living in urban areas. If cities are to be
able to absorb and adapt to this increase, they will
gradually have to undergo changes change in every
respect: technology, mobility, sustainable development, etc
2. Climate change. Air and water pollution have harmed
New York City’s environment. Highways and mass
transportation systems have become overcrowded and
outdated, adding to climate issues.

3. Energy transition. Cities only cover 2 percent of the

world’s landmass, but they consume 78 percent of global
energy. Solutions like so-called “vertical farms” built in
abandoned buildings may lead the way towards more
environmentally sustainable cities.

4. Major terror attacks. World Trade Center, located in

Manhattan, was one of the targets of Islamic terrorist
group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning
of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Photo:
