 Chair

• comes from the early 13th century

English word chaere, which came
from “old French chaiere (“chair,
seat, throne”)”.
• A chair is a piece of furniture with
a raised surface supported by
legs, commonly used to seat a
single person.
• Materials - ranging from wood to
metal to synthetic metal (eg.
plastic),
• they may be padded or
upholstered in various colors and
fabrics, either just on the seat or
on entire chair
 Materials

• wood, metal or strong materials like stone or

acrylic.
• may have hard surfaces of wood, metal, plastic or
other materials, or some or all of these hard
surfaces may be covered with upholstery or
padding.
• The design may be made of porous materials,
• be drilled with holes for decoration;
• a low back or gaps can provide ventilation.
• recycled materials like cutlery and wooden play
bricks, pencils, plumbing tubes, rope, corrugated
cardboard, and PVC pipe.

 Design and ergonomics
• Chair design considers intended usage,
• ergonomics (how comfortable it is for the
occupant),
• non-ergonomic functional requirements such
as size, stacking ability, folding ability, weight,
durability, stain resistance, and artistic design.
Intended usage determines the desired seating
position.
• “Task chair” or any chair intended for people to
work at a desk or table
• Dinning chairs can only recline very slightly.
• Dental chairs are necessarily reclined.
• Easy chairs for watching television or movies are
somewhere in between depending on the height of
the screen.
• In general, backrests come in three heights: Lower
back backrests support only the lumbar region.
Shoulder height backrests support the entire back
and shoulders.
• Some chairs have foot rests.
• A stool or other simple chair may have a simple straight or curved bar near the bottom for the sitter to place his or her
feet on.
• Some chairs have two curved bands of wood (also known as rockers) attached to the bottom of the legs. They are called
rocking chairs.
• Actual chair dimensions are determined by measurements of the human body or anthropometric measurements.
• The two most relevant anthropometric measurement for chair design is the popliteal height and buttock popliteal
length.

 Ergonomics
• scientific discipline
• concerned with the understanding of
interactions among humans and other
elements of a system, and the profession
that applies theory, principles, data and
methods to design to optimize human well-
being and overall system performance.
• It is used to prevent repetitive strain
injuries and other musculoskeletal
disorders, which can develop over time and
can lead to long-term disability.
• Comprises three main fields of research :
physical, cognitive, and organizational

• PHYSICAL ERGONOMICS
It is concerned with human anatomy, and some
of the anthropometric, physiological and bio
mechanical characteristics as they relate to the
physical activity.
• COGNITIVE ERGONOMICS • ORGANISATIONAL ERGONOMICS
Cognitive ergonomics is concerned with mental
processes, such as perception, memory, reasoning, and Organizational ergonomics is concerned with the
motor response, as they affect interactions among optimization of socio-technical systems, including their

 An office chair
• It is usually a swivel chair, with a set of wheels for mobility and adjustable height.

EGRONOMICS
• Office chair often have
adjustable seats, armrests, backs,
back supports and heights to
prevent repetitive stress injury
and back pain associated for long
periods.
• Ergonomic chairs fit an
individual’s needs and provide
support where the individual
needs it.
