ASSIGNING LETTER

GRADES
Calonzo, Verna V.
Letter Grades
are symbol used to represent a
range of grades.
The traditional use of letter-grade system
is to assign a single letter grade for each
subject. (e.g. A, B, C, D, F) In some
cases, a single number (e.g. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
OR 100, 95, 90, etc.) is used instead of a
letter, but the marking system is
essentially the same.
1. They typically are a combination of
achievement, effort, work habits and
good behavior.
2. The proportion of students assigned
each letter grade varies from teacher to
teacher
3. They do not indicate a student’s
strengths and weaknesses in learning
Just because there are school that utilize the A, B,
C, D, E marking system, most teachers will be
faced with the problem of assigning letter grades.
This involves the following questions
1. What should be included in a letter grade?
2. How should achievement data be combined in
assigning letter grades?
3. What frame or reference should be used in
grading?
4. How should the distribution of letter grades be
determined?
The ff. set of symbols has 12
categories:

A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-,

D+, D, D-, F
When all of these have been considered, the
time to do some computations with the use
of the measures of central tendency,
measures of variability, standard deviation,
etc. will be of much importance to be able to
come up with correct interpretations and
assign grades that are defensible and fair.
