CREATIVE

WRITING
• Creative writing is
considered to be any writing,
fiction, poetry, or non-
fiction, that goes outside the
bounds of normal
professional, journalistic,
academic, and technical
forms of literature.
• Works which fall into this category
include novels, epics, short stories,
and poems.
• is writing that expresses ideas and
thoughts in an imaginative way. The
writer gets to express feelings and
emotions instead of just presenting
the facts.
• Both fictional and non-fictional works
fall into this category, including such
forms as novels, biographies, short
stories, and poems.
• In the academic setting, creative
writing is typically separated into
fiction and poetry classes, with a focus
on writing in an original style, as
opposed to imitating pre-existing
genres such as crime or horror.
• Creative writing can technically
be considered any writing
of original composition.
General Tips in Creative
Writing
1. Use the Channels- One effective
technique in terms of 'getting started'
writing a piece is to zone into one of
the 'creative channels.
Feeling: emotional response to things,
what images are evoked when you
think about a particular topic or image
based on the feelings you get from it.
Thinking: this would be your introspective
look at whatever topic you have, from a
philosophical or logical perspective.

Observational: this is truly the most


objective channel, where you write
about something purely in a physical
sense.
2. Read as much and as often as you can.
Remember, every writer is a reader first.
3. Make sure you have a dictionary and
thesaurus available whenever you are
writing.
4. Be observant. The people and
activities that surround you will provide
you with great inspiration in every
outputs you will create.
5. Grammar: learn the rules and then
learn how to break them effectively.
6. Stop procrastinating. Turn off the TV,
disconnect from the Internet, tune out
the rest of the world, sit down, and
write.
7. Read works by highly successful
authors to learn what earns a loyal
readership.
8. Proofread everything at least three
times before submitting your work for
publication.
9. Use writing exercises to improve your
skills, strengthen your talent, and
explore different genres, styles, and
techniques.
10. Allow yourself to write poorly, to
write a weak, uninteresting story or a
boring, grammatically incorrect poem.
You’ll never succeed if you don’t allow
yourself a few failures along the way.
