HISTORY
• Jama masjid was built in 1424 during the reign of Ahmed Shah
I

• The reason for building this structure was that when the Sultan
arrived to offer his prayer during Jumma or Eid

• The mosque was originally intended only for private use of the
sultans

• In the period when it was built it was constructed , it was the


largest mosque in India

• The architecture design of the mosque is very unique as it has


its entrance from three side

• Architecture of jama masjid is blend of Hindu and Islamic


styling

PRAYER HALL
• The prayer hall occupies
the fourth (east) side

• It is rectangular in shape
and covered by four
vaults which is floored
with white marble

• In prayer hall there are


260 columns & carved
with the form of bell
hanging on chain and it
is covered by 15 domes

• The boundary prayer


hall was known as qibla
and is richly ornate

are carved like lotus
flowers, closely
related to typical
domes of jain
temples

Minaret details
• The two principal minarets
flanking the main arched
entrance way collapsed in
1819 earthquake, its lower
portions still stands

• The main prayer hall 210’ X


95’ has over 260 columns
supporting the roof, with its
15 domes, making a walk
through the hall a beautiful
maze of light & shadow

• Two small archway are placed


on the either side of central
one

Material used
• Yellow sandstone was main construction material and white marble was used for
flooring

• The mosque shows distinctive Hindu and Jain influence on the sultanate period
architecture

• A number of central dome were sculpted as lotus flowers and these have a lot of
similarities with archetypal domes of Jain shrines
