HISTORY

- The name "Bulakan" was derived from


the Tagalog word "bulak" which is cotton
in English.
- When the Spaniards first came to the
country's shore, they found cotton,
among others, growing abundantly in
many places in Luzon, particularly in
Bulakan.

FOLK ARCHITECTURE

BARASOAIN CHURCH

- Is deemed the most important religious building


in Philippines.
- located in the city of Malolos in Bulacan province.
- The architectural style of the church was late
1800s eclectic, a mix of Baroque, Romanesque and
neo-classical styles. In the case of Barasoain, the
facade is mainly oval-style Baroque.

SAYAW OBANDO (Fertility Dance)

- Is a dance ritual and later also became


a Catholic festival celebrated every May in Obando,
Bulacan, Philippines. Locals and pilgrims,
sometimes dressed in traditional costume, dance
and sing in the town's streets to honour and
beseech Obando's three patron saints.
FOLK LITERATURE

BALAGTASAN
- was named after Francisco Baltazar y de la Cruz
(April 2, 1788 – February 20) , in Barrio Panginay,
Balagtas Bulacan, formerly Bigaa.
- Also known as Francisco Baltazar, was a
prominent Filipino poet, and is widely considered
one of the greatest Filipino literary laureates for his
impact on Filipino literature. The famous
epic Florante at Laura is regarded as his
defining work.
SINGKABAN FESTIVAL
-Is an annual provincial event of Bulacan where
Bulakenyo culture and arts are featured in a week-
long celebration. It showcases the traditional arts
of the literary form “Balagtasan”, folk dances, and
traditional songs known as “kundiman.”
-The main focus though, is on the
singkaban, a Bulakenyo art of creating an
entrance arch and other decorative
materials mainly from bamboo.
