Embroidery or “Pagbuburda”
-The embroidery tradition in the Philippines was born in the town of
Taal, Batangas during the turn of the century.

-During the Spanish times, piña was the most expensive fabric for
Barong Tagalog on very rare and special events.

Puni or Palm leaf folding (Bulacan)
-Another dying folk art, Puni or palm leaf folding was intended to
create artful toys for kids.

-puni can also be used to create woven baskets, bags and even fans!

Saniculas cookie mold carvings (Pampanga)

-This folk art is elegant and beautiful as it is a dying art.

-Saniculas cookies are arrowroot cookies that have the image of St.
Nicholas molded on it ergo the name Saniculas.

“Singkaban”
-Filipino word for decorated bamboo arch, is used as a welcome signage of
a town, city or village in the country.
-It is widely used as decoration during town fiestas in Bulacan.
-In the celebration, Singkaban also refers to “Sining at Kalinangan ng
Bulacan” (Arts and Culture of Bulacan).

Pahiyas Festival
-Every May 15, the townsfolk of
Lucban, Quezon, don their houses with
fruits, vegetables and colorful kiping (a
leaf-shaped wafer made of rice and
dyed with food coloring) in celebration
of the Pahiyas Festival.

-The word ‘pahiyas’ was derived from


the word ‘payas’, which means
decoration or to decorate.

“Sanghiyang” or “Sayaw sa
Apoy”(Cavite)

-A pre-colonial ritual celebrated by


firewalkers of Indang and Alfonso.

-Itis a fusion of the elements of folk


religion, magic, and Christian faith.

-It is done to give thanks to bathala


for the blessings given to the people.

Santa. Cruzan or “Flores
de Mayo”
-“FloresDe Mayo” Spanish term for
Flowers of May we also call it Santa
Cruzan.
-Santa Cruzan is held annually in the
warm month of May and is considered
to be the “Queen of Filipino Festivals”.
-Beautifultown belles Flores de Mayo
or Santacruzan are being celebrated
annually over the country especially in
the summer month of April or May.

Senakulo (Passion
Play)
-Catholic devotees in the Philippines have
been doing the Senakulo or Passion play for
several decades now every Lenten season.

-In the Philippines, this tradition is called


Senakulo which started back in 1904 in Barrio
Dayap, which is presently the area covering
three barangays in Cainta—Sto. Domingo,
Sto. Nino, and Sta. Rosa.
