POINT OF VIEW:
Having a good leader is very important, because it depends on their
decisions to make a company grow and successful. According to the
Starboard Value (2016), they believe that Yahoo! is deeply
undervalued and opportunities exist within the control of
management and the Board of Directors to unlock significant value for
the benefit of all shareholders, they have been extremely
disappointed with Yahoo’s dismal financial performance, poor
management execution, very bad and easily noticed compensation
and hiring practices, and general lack of accountability and oversight
by the board. Though they did not exactly say that they want Marissa
Mayer ousted as the Chief Executive Officer of the company.

POINT OF VIEW:
Marissa Mayer has been criticized for some of
the efforts she made to bring Yahoo! Back to
relevance and keep it competitive with rivals
including Facebook, Google, and Snapchat.
Yahoo! Admitted it could not find a way for the
service to make money.

SHORT HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Yahoo! was started at Stanford University. It was founded in January
1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo, who were Electrical Engineering
graduate students when they created a website named “Jerry and
David’s guide to the World Wide Web”. The guide was a directory of
other websites, organized in a hierarchy, as opposed to a searchable
index of pages. In April 1994, Jerry and David’s Guide to the World
Wide Web was renamed “Yahoo!”. The word “YAHOO” is an
backronym for “Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle” or “Yet
Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.” The yahoo.com domain was
created on January 18, 1995.

SHORT HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Yahoo! Grew rapidly throughout the 1990s and diversified
into a web-portal, followed by numerous high-profile
acquisitions.

On 2012, the Board of Directors offered a position which is


the CEO role to Marissa Mayer. They think she is the best
and/or fit leader to the company, because of her
unparalleled track record in technology, design, and product
execution.

How did the changing of CEO affect Yahoo’s economical state?

Is Marissa Mayer failed to recognize that her most important job


as CEO of Yahoo was to build and sustain a strong and vibrant
culture?

mainstream business?

• Yahoo is known for its web-portal, search engine, etc.

• Its products portfolio includes yahoo messenger, yahoo


mail, etc.

gradually due to Google’s strong presence

• Financial health of the company is not so promising for the

• Yahoo Directory is the most structured and
authenticated business directory, any customized
development to its user in this will lead to flow of new
revenue to the company.
• Advertising in social media and internet has become
essential element for every commodity.
• It can focus on diversification of related business
segments in internet space.

Threats
Yahoo’s presence in the search engine services is
declining very rapidly because of Google’s strong presence.
Google being the leading the service provider on the
internet, is grabbing the revenues from advertisements.
The number of competitors are increasing of new
innovations in the internet space by young entrepreneurs.

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION
Mayer should focus in improving her workplace attitude and behavior.
Leadership is not just being a leader or being a head of a certain company,
but leadership is having a strong connection or bond with your co-workers
or subordinates to have a quality output or results. And, the company
Yahoo! should improve their strategic planning.

The advantage of this approach is Mayer and her co-workers will produce a
healthy workplace where they can move freely and they can do work
properly. They should improve their strategic planning for them to be able
to get back to the mainstream media.
On the other side, Mayer may not have build a strong connection to their
employees, and it may not have a unity of their company.

CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

Marissa Mayer, the former CEO of Yahoo lacked in


Strategic Business Taker or being a strategic planner,
and not having a Good Communication Skills nor as an
Excellent Communicator.

This study will recommend that the Companies and/or


the Board of Directors must be careful in their
decisions and to find a Visionary Leaders.
