Andes

By Joel
The Andes were formed between the Nazca
Andes
and South American plate.
The Andes were formed by
tectonic activity where a oceanic
plate subducts under a
continental plate. To get such a
high mountain chain in a
subduction zone is unusual
which adds to the significance of
trying to find out when it
happened. The prevailing view is
that the Andes was formed
when a large amount of rock
dropped of the base of the
Earth’s crust in answer to over-
thickening of the crust in this
region. When this rock was
removed, the remaining portion

Formation of crust underwent rapid uplift.

Most of the Andean mountain
chains are volcanic.
The Andes has amazing
biodiversity
Is the source of the Amazon
river
Hold the world’s largest
mineral deposit
Has the 2nd most elevated peak
of any mountain range
Extends through seven
different South American
countries
