MASTITIS BREAST INFECTION IN
POSTPARTUM WOMAN
S : Mother complained of breast pain and feeling very fever
O :
• Mother’s general condition is good
• Breast milk comes out but it’s not yet smooth
• Vital sign :
• Blood pressure = 120/80 mmHg
• Pulse = 80x / minute
• Respiration = 20x / minute
• Temperature = 38.5°C
• Uterine Fundus Height = 3 fingers above the symphysis
• Urination = 5 – 6x / day
• Defecate = 1x / day
• Lochea Rubra
A : Mrs. “X” age 21 years in the postpartum day 7 with
mastitis breast infection
P :
a. Explain the results of the examination to the mother that
the condition of the mother there is swelling in the breast
of the mother, and pain that is a sign of infection in the
breast
b. Explain the mother that the mother immediately gets the
right treatment for the infected breast infection, namely :
• compress the breast with warm water
• to reduce pain can be given analgesic treatment
• to overcome infections given antibiotics
c. Give counselling to the mothers regarding breast
care, that by first cleaning the breast before
breastfeeding. Tell the mother about proper
breastfeeding techniques by helping the mother
improve the baby’s sucking on the breast, supporting
frequent breastfeeding
d. Provide supportive counselling to mothers about
mastitis. Mastitis is a very painful experience and
makes women frustrated, and makes many women
feel very sick in addition to effective treatment and
pain control, women need emotional support.
Mothers must be reassured about the value of
breastfeeding, safe to continue, breast milk from
mastitis affected breast will not harm the baby, and
the breast will recover from both the shape and
function.
e. Explain to the mother so still maintain the
fulfilment of good nutritional patterns done by
eating foods containing balanced nutrition, namely
carbohydrates (rice potatoes, bread), protein (eggs,
meat, fish, tempeh, tofu), vitamins (vegetables and
fruit). Reproduce consume foods that contain
protein to accelerate healing.
f. Explain to the mother to still get adequate rest and
not too tired so that milk production is not
interrupted and the mother does not get tired.
g. Explains to mother the importance of maintaining
genital hygiene with soap after urinating or
defecating from font to back.
h. Encourage the mother not to have sexual relations
first during childbirth and explain the risk factors.
