ETHNIC ART FORM
• DANCE - in highlands, dance steps were imitation
of movements of certain animals like birds while
people near the sea choreograph mimicking the
fishes
• VISUAL ART - pottery, weaving, wood carving,
metal craftingwere dominant during the pre-
colonial period.
• ARCHITECTURE - Filipinos used local materials
• FOLK LITERATURE -folk speeches,
songs, and narratives based on their
experiences
• THEATRE ARTS - tribal presentations
and rituals were the theatrical
performances depicting their beliefs.

SPANISH COLONIAL TRADITION
• →Spaniards tend to replace the Philippine Indigeneous
art with Western Art Form.
• →religion and secularization greatly influenced the art in
the Philippines
• →Friars were the ones supervising the practice of arts in
the country .
• LITERATURE- classified into religious and
secular prose and poetry
• THEATRE ARTS - secular and religious plays like
“komedya” became popular.
• DANCES- religious dances comonly perforemed
to venerate patron and saints proliferated.

• MUSIC - Spaniards introduced piano and other western

used in contructing buildings like churches, houses and
government offices.
» Western Spanish influence was evident in architecture, the exterior, interior of
buildings were embelished with wood carvings or metal works with intricate
designs
