SETTING PROSE

BY GROUP 4
Definition Of Setting

■ Setting is the time and place (or when and where) of the story. It’s a literary element
of literature used in novels, short stories, plays, films, etc., and usually introduced
during the exposition (beginning) of the story, along with the characters. The setting
may also include the environment of the story, which can be made up of the physical
location, climate, weather, or social and cultural surroundings.
The function of setting

■ The function of setting in a prose work is of great importance. It has immense effect
on plots and characters, as it could act as an antagonist, post a conflict that
characters need to resolve, or shed light upon characters. It can also present
symbolic persons, objects, place, action, or situations. Setting can establish the
mood or atmosphere of a scene or story, and develop the plot into a more realistic
form, resulting in more convincing characters. By establishing mood, setting also
helps the audience relate themselves to the characters in a story.
Kind Of Setting

■ Some division of the setting, those are:

■ Setting of time
That is when the figure or the perpetrator does something when the incident in the story
is happening. Like for example: In the morning, during the day, sick days, at night, in the
past, in the future, etc.
■ Setting of place
That is where the figure or the perpetrator experiences events or events in the story.
Like for example: in an old building, in a building, in the sea, in a forest, in a school, in a
plane, in space, etc.
