WHAT IS PHISHING ?
Phishing is an attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive
information such as user names, passwords and credit
card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in
an electronic communication
TECHNIQUES OF PHISHING

1. SPEAR PHISHING :- A targeted scam directed


at a specific or department
2. WHALING :-A phishing scam directed
specifally at high ranking officers or other
high profile targets within the government,
military or business

3.VISHING:- A phone scam intended to lure a
user into providing sensitive personal information
4.SMISHING:-A Phishing scam that sends bogus
text messages to mobile phones
5.SEXTORTION :-Sexual exploitation as a means
of blackmail or extortion
CAUSES OF PHISHING
• Misleading e-mails
• No check of source address
• Vulnerability in browsers
• Vulnerability in Applications
• No strong authentication at websites of banks and
financial institutions
• Limited use of digital signatures
• Non-availability of secure desktop tools
• Lack of user awareness
EFFECTS OF PHISHING

• Internet fraud
• Identity theft
• Financial loss to the original institutions
• Difficulties in Law Enforcement Investigation
• Erosion of Public Trust in the Internet
PREVENTION AGAINST PHISHING
ATTACK

• Never respond to e-mails that request personal


financial information
• Keep a regular check on your account
• Keep your computer secure
• Be cautious with e-mails and personal data
