Kingdom of Travancore was one of the most powerful
kingdoms in southern India.Travancore Royal Family was
the ruling house of Kingdom of Travancore from 1729 to
1949.Marthanda Varma was known as the maker of
Modern Travancore. The last Maharaja to rule Travancore
was Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma.On1stJuly
1947,they lost their ruling rights when Travancore merged
with the Kingdom of Cochin and the short–lived state of
Travancore-Kochi was formed.

•Founder of Modern Travancore.
•Called ‘Iron man of modern Travancore’,
‘Asoka of Travancore ‘,Prince of
Neyyantinkara’.
•First Asian king to defeat an European
force (Kulachal war,1741).
•Ramapurath warrier & Kunjan Nambiar
were his court poets .
•In 1750,he dedicated his kingdom to Lord
Sri Padmanabha & ruled as
‘Padmanabhadasan’.
•The novel Marthanda Varma written by
C.V Raman Pillai.

•Popularly known as ‘Dharma
Raja ‘.
•Nicknamed ‘Kizhavan Raja’.
•He was the longest serving
king of Travancore .
•Shifted Capital of Travancore
from Padmanabhapuram to
Thiruvanathapuram in 1790.
•Made 2nd Trippadidanam in
1766.

• First king receive ‘Maharaja’ title from
British Government.
• Made Pandara patta proclamation in
1865 known as ‘the Magna Carta of
Travancore Peasants’.

suspension bridge during his period.
• First orderly census at Thiruvithamkur
done during his period.
• A R Raja Raja Varma,Raja Ravi Varma,
Kerala Varma Valiyakoyi Thampuran
were his court members.

• Reign :1880-1885.
• ‘Scholar of Travancore’.
• Ramayyankar was his famous
Diwan.
• In 1886 a lease indenture of
999 years of Mullaperyar
damage was made between
Visakam Thirunal & British
Secretary of India for Periyar
irrigation works.

• His era called ‘Memorial era ‘.
• Established Archeological department,
Life Insurance System, Finger print
bureau at Travancore.
• Malayalee memorial (1891),Ezhava
memorial (1896) submitted to him.
• In 1910 Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna
pillai expelled from Travancore.
• Mullaperiyar damage commissioned in
1895 & Inaugurated by Lord Wenlock
• Mullaperiyar lease agreement between
Diwan Rama Iyengar & John Child
Hannington in 1886.

• She abolished polygamy, Animal
sacrifice, Devadasi system.
• Introduced Makkathayam,midday
meal system.
• Constructed Neendakara Bridge.
• Vaikam Satyagraha -30th March

• Gandhiji visited her in 1925.

• Reign : 1931-1949
• Last ruler of Travancore Princely state.
• Introduced bicameral legislature, Sreemoolam
Assembly & Sri Chithira State Council.
• Nivartha Agitation in 1932
• Thiruvithamkur temple entry proclamation
issued by him in 1936 November 12.
• First Chancellor of University of Kerala
• Established Travancore PSC, Travandrum
Engineering College, Sri Chithira Art
Gallery,Travancore public transport, Travancore
rubber works,Pallivasal hydroelectric project ,
University of Travancore (became University of
Kerala in 1957)
• His famous Diwan –C P Ramaswami Iyyer.
