 III. RATIONALE

⊷ Solar-powered drip irrigation is the marriage of two

systems that have been shown to have an enormous
independent impact, but have rarely been used
together in a well-documented fashion. Drip irrigation
is an extremely efficient mechanism for delivering
water (and fertilizer) directly to the roots of plants.

 III. RATIONALE

⊷ It increases yields and allows for introduction of new (potentially high-

value) crops in regions where they could not be sustained by rainfall
alone. Solar-powered (photovoltaic, or PV) pumps save potentially
hours of labor daily in rural off-grid areas where water hauling is
traditionally done by hand by women and young girls. They are
durable and immune to fuel shortages, and in the medium- to long-
term cost less than traditional diesel-powered generators (e.g., Kohle
et. al., 2002).

 Project Statement
⊷ A fully automated irrigation system is designed,
built and tested using solar PV cells and a
digital controller. The system is economical,
reliable, portable, and compact. Savings
inelectricity bills and water bills can justify the
initial cost, which may be a bit more than
theconventional system, over a period of time.
It causes less damage to the environment
andreleases the public utility from an extra
load. It can be used in small or big farms,
gardens, parks and lawns. Also, it can be used
as a universal solar-based-
controller to control building doors, water
heaters, and air-conditioning control systems.

 Project Statement
⊷ Solar powered irrigation is a highly beneficial
alternative method, especially in high sunlightreceiving
areas and which are at remote points. In India this
system is not grown wide because ofhigh initial
installation costs and scarcity of able technology and
technicians. In future, while the prices of fossil fuels
rise it is expected that the cost of the photovoltaic cell
will decrease and thissystem will become more cost
competitive and more common. Today, an efficient
solar pumpsystem has an average daily solar energy
power to hydraulic efficiency of more than 4%. Solar
PV panel photovoltaic modules of the monocrystalline
type now have efficiencies in excess of 12%and more
efficient motor and irrigation pumpsets are available.
