HEAT OF FORMATION AND REACTION

PHYSICAL SCIENCE 20
ENTHALPIES OF FORMATION

 ∆H = Hf ◦ (measured in kJ/mole) is the heat lost or gained when

formation
one mole of a substance is formed from its elements.
HEAT OF FORMATION
 The heat of formation can be found using a Thermochemical Data Table. Using the one provided, what
is the heat of formation for the following compounds?
ENTHALPIES OF REACTIONS ∆H

 Potential energy diagrams led us to basic enthalpies of reactions where

∆H was given. We now will calculate ∆H:
 Formula:
EXAMPLE

 These values are found on your thermochemical data sheet. Since there are 2 moles of HCl you need to multiply
the ΔfH◦ value by two. Bromine is not a compound so it has a enthalpy of formation of 0. Since there are 2 mol of
HBr you need to multiply the the Δ H◦ value by two. Since Cl is not a compound it has no Δ H◦ value so it is 0.
