Example 1: Construct an ungrouped frequency
distribution table for the age of 50 service
crews at McDollibee Restaurant:
21 18 22 19 18 18 19 19 25 20
22 18 23 24 19 25 18 21 24 25
23 19 21 23 20 18 21 23 20 24
25 21 20 22 20 20 21 22 23 23
18 24 21 21 21 19 19 18 21 21
Steps:
1. Find the range, R, using the formula:
𝑹 = 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 − 𝑳𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆
2. Compute for the number of intervals, n, by using the formula:
𝒏 = 𝟏 + 𝟑. 𝟑 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝑵
where 𝒏 = 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒔
𝑵 = 𝒑𝒐𝒑𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏
3. Compute for the 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒔𝒊𝒛𝒆, 𝒊, using the formula:
𝑹
𝒊=
𝒏
4. Using the lowest score as lower limit, add (𝒊 − 𝟏) to it to obtain the higher limit of the desired
class interval.
5. The lower limit of the second interval may be obtained by adding the class size to the lower
limit of the first interval. Add 𝒊 − 𝟏 to the result to obtain the higher limit of the second
interval.
6. Repeat step 5 to obtain the third class interval, and so on, and so forth.
7. When the 𝒏 class intervals are completed, determine the frequency for each class interval by
counting the elements.
