• One sentence in the summary
may summarise the main idea of
a whole paragraph from the
passage. However, the words
needed to fill in the gaps MUST
come from the passage.
• Highlight key words and phrases
from each sentence in the
summary e.g. in the first sentence
‘more effective’ and ‘protecting
native lands’.
• Then scan the passage to find
where each of these ideas is dealt
with in the passage.

Q1: Read the first paragraph
What is a synonym for “protecting”? _________
What is a synonym for “native lands”? _________

Q2: Read paragraph B and identify the two things which have made it
possible for small communities to make their own maps. Which one is
already mentioned in the summary and so, which one should you
choose as your answer?

• Then read carefully what is said
about each.
