Definition
A. Finite Verbs
Finite verbs is a form of verb containing tenses: present or past,
influenced by agreement with the subject, also influenced by
number (singular / plural).

example:
• She goes to school.
→ the word goes is finite verb because it is used in present tense
and is bound by subject she
B. Non-finite verbs
Non-finite verbs is the opposite of Finite verbs, which is a form of
verb that does not contain tenses: present or past.
Non-finite verbs cannot stand alone like finite verb, therefore
non-finite verb can be converted into verbs in the form of
participle, gerund, infinitive (to and bare).

example:
• She asked me to send this letter.
→ the word to send is a non-finite verb because it is not bound
by tenses, also has an additional particle to which is a form to
infinitive
Type
The following are types of finite and non-finite verbs.
A. Finite verbs.
Finite verbs are divided into several types and can be used in main clause or subordinate
clause in a sentence. The following types are finite verbs.
1) Transitive / Intransitive Verbs
Finite verbs can be transitive (need objects) or intransitive verbs (don't need objects).
Transitive verb
• I eat fried rice.
→ eat is a transitive verb and is a finite verb
Intransitive verb
• She always comes on time.
→ comes is an intransitive verb and is a finite verb
2) Action & Stative Verbs
Finite verbs can be either action (stating action) or stative verbs (stating condition).
Verb Action
• He jumps over the bridge.
→ jumps are action verbs and are finite verbs
Stative Verb
• I love Sunday.
→ love is a stative verb and a finite verb
3) Linking Verbs
Finite verbs can be linking verbs.
example:
• My bags weigh 45kg.
→ weigh is a linking verb and is a finite verb.
4) Auxiliary Verbs
Finite verbs can be auxiliary (is, are, do, does, did, may, might, etc).
example:
• She was waiting in the room.
→ was a finite verb, while waiting was a non-finite verb
B. Non-Finite Verbs
Non-Finite verbs are divided into several types.
1) Infinitive
Non-finite verbs can be either to infinitive or bare infinitive
• He wanted to find a solution.
→ to find is a non-finite verb
2) Gerund
Non-finite verbs can be gerunds
• Playing football is nice.
→ playing is a non-finite verb
3) Participle
a) Present Participle
Present participle can function as verb (forming continuous tense) and adjective.
as verb
• He is crying.
→ crying is a non-finite verb
as adjective
• This is interesting.
→ interesting is non-finite verb
b) Past Participle
Past participle can function as verb (forming perfect tense passive voice) and adjective.
as verb
• He has visited Bali.
→ visited is a non-finite verb
as adjective
• I am bored.
→ bored is a non-finite verb
